Sol’s Nieto on Mockingbird closed
Landlord shut them out.
DALLAS Sol's Nieto, the Mexican restaurant on Mockingbird at Abrams, closed last week after the landlord shut them down, confirmed manager Blanca Perez.
"Sol's is done," she said in an email. "Business wasn't as good anymore, and we got a bit behind on rent. The landlords refused to make any kind of deal with us, so there is nothing we can do. After 10 years, it's heart-breaking for us to go down this way."
Sol's first opened as a spin-off of the branch in Deep Ellum (which itself closed in February). Both were a step above the typical combination-plate Tex-Mex in that they paid unusually careful attention to vegetables and not just meat. Always vegetarian-friendly, Sol's Nieto had recently become popular within the vegan community for its willingness to use non-dairy Daiya cheese.
But it also fell into the trap of offering discount coupons, a downward spiral that could be traced on its Facebook page (which has since been removed). Nearly every comment posted in the past eight months seemed to be a query from someone begging for coupons or asking if coupons were being taken.
Another branch remains in Garland, and if you look on its Facebook page, you can already see a comment from someone whining about the coupon they have for the now-defunct Mockingbird branch. What are the prices, anyway -- maybe $7-8 for a combo plate? Just pay the full price already. How about supporting your local restaurant.

So very saddened to read this.
Coupons? Give me a break. Teresa was right on, "Just pay the full price already." The food was great, the beer was cold, and the staff were super. We must support our local spots folks, or it's mcJunk for everyone.

Come on..the place sucked. Cold beer? That's your criteria? The food sucked. Staff was rude. Good riddance.

TMIMOTORS, sorry to hear you had rude service there, they always seemed pretty nice to me

I'll allow the fact that they may not have been the absolute best Tex Mex in the area, but I think it's unfair to say they "sucked." And I've heard the complaint about rude service before, but I, nor anyone I know, have ever received anything but great service there.

That is too bad; I thought there tex mex plates were decent. But the interior always felt like a dark gloomy space to me. And I always hated that outdoor "patio"...it was built like somebody's backyard deck, elevated above street level.....

SitizenKane, agreed, the ambience definitely left something to be desired

The food was delicious, the staff was always nice and accommodating, and such affordable prices. People don't realize those coupon sites are death to businesses who offer them too frequently. This is very very sad news to us who wanted to eat tex mex without the heart attack and lard.

They will have no problem leasing that space out; that intersection (abrams at mockingbird) seems to get more popular every day.....any idea when Olivelli's opens???

The neighborhood could use a good breakfast place.

I have "just paid the full price already" at Sol's many times, and it's that's unfair statement when it's a deal that the establishment themselves has already offered.
A Living Social deal is different from a walk-in "coupon", in that it's already been purchased. I have 2 for the Mockingbird location that hadn't been used yet, and I would much rather use them at the Garland location -- where I would spend considerably above & beyond the purchased amount -- than simply get a refund from Living Social, which wouldn't benefit the restaurant in any way.

Teresa Gubbins, staff:
marcillus, if you've already purchased something via Living Social, then does that mean you'll be eating at the Garland branch and not paying anything? because if that's the case, then i don't see how that's a benefit to the Garland branch
i haven't used Living Social, but i think the problem with any of those "deals" is that they require the restaurant to serve its food at a discounted price. when your entrees are already under $10, that's hard on your bottom line, regardless of the nature of the program.

Having known someone that's used Living Social in the past for their business, I can assure you that the business actually receives very little of the money that you pay. It's more of a way to advertise, not to make money.

No, it means that the $20 of food that I purchased for $10 (or whatever the deal was) will be part of the much larger food & drink tab that my family & I will spend on our visit there. Or I could take my $10 refund from Living Social and forget about the Garland location. I suspect they'd much rather have the additional money I spend on margaritas & extra nachos than none at all.
I have no idea what sort of deal the establishments make with Living Social, Groupon and the like -- what I do know is that I've discovered more than a few restaurants that I love & return to (sans "deal") that I never would've even tried without the discount to lure me in the first place.
I simply think that demonizing people who would like to dine out on a budget isn't very productive.

Teresa Gubbins, staff:
marcillus, did not mean to demonize anyone. if you've returned multiple times to Sol's Nieto without expecting a discount, then you're exactly the kind of diner i like. but discount coupons do seem to have played a role in the demise of the restaurant

And the Groupon coupons was a last gasp effort by Pizza Venti before they closed (NEC Mockingbird at Abrams in the new Olivellit space) !

I liked Sol's Taco Lounge(I lived on Commerce) until I had a near death experience of passing out on my toilet before spewing my chalupas all over my feet and floor.
I never thought refried beans could come out whole.
After nearly a week of vomiting and needing to be within 10 feet of a toilet to expel my bowels-- I vowed not to eat food prepared by people who don't understand basic sanitation.

While I dearly love my $25 Pappas Bros. discounts we receive for our birthdays, that is about one glass of wine, and not a drop in the bucket of the overall bill. At a place with entrees under $10 a discount is hard to maintain long term.

Would have gone to Sol's more than twice if their margaritas hadn't sucked. Always sorry to see a local business go under, but maybe another tenant will come in--it is a great location. Also, Groupons and the like KILL businesses who don't court the people who come in--the point of Groupons is to get new business, and I can't understand how restaurants in particular, when faced with a Groupon by a customer, don't acknowledge the customer in any special way to give them a reason to come back.
