Prestonwood Baptist in Dallas runs afoul of neighborhood residents with planned cross
City councilmember Linda Koop succeeded in curbing tree removal.
So, the Hillcrest Road campus of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which used to be that 16 acre Hillcrest Church, wants to chop down seven trees and build a big huge 40-foot-tall cross at the northeast corner of Hillcrest and Churchill Way. Well, now they are only going to remove five. Dallas City Councilmember Linda Koop, who must cringe whenever she hears the word “Hillcrest,” along with Plan Commissioner Bruce Bernbaum, met with church officials and have saved two of the seven trees from being demolished for the giant, lighted cross.
I ask you: Is it worth living near a church? I used to think it would be rather nice. First Hillcrest Church was such a royal pain to the homeowners up there. Remember when Hillcrest applied for a specific-use permit to house Coram Deo Academy? Jeez Louise, neighbors lined up to reiterate their HISTORIC distrust of the church and concerns over traffic. I recall the days when there were signs lining Churchill Way from Preston to Hillcrest, neighbors furious at the church for buying and demolishing homes to make additional expansion space and parking. Then they wanted a whole dang school! Church supporters spoke about the positive impact it would have, both on students and Dallas as a whole, and the importance of schools in civic life. Then Hiram Sasser, an attorney with the conservative, pro-religious freedom Liberty Institute, challenged the council’s right to do anything but approve the specific-use permit, citing the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. As I recall, there was even talk of a federal lawsuit. The neighborhood went nuts.
Hillcrest got out of Dodge by selling to Prestonwood Baptist, doing what one neighbor tells me was flicking a final finger to the Hillcrest Forest Neighborhood Association.
Well, the Hillcrest Forest Neighborhood Association thinks the giant cross is larger than it needs to be, but have not formally objected to it.
“We understand that in a neighborhood as large as ours, there will always be differing opinions on various issues, and we respect their concerns,” wrote Hillcrest Forest Neighborhood Association President Bruce Wilke in an email.
Me, I think I’d just not ever buy a house within 300 feet of a mega church. Life is too short. Baby boomers are embracing churches more as we circle the drain, and the bigger they get, the more scandalous. Recall Grapevine Church's pastor Ed Young urging married couples to have more sex a few years ago? These mega-churches may be getting better and better at marketing, and rich enough to buy private jets, but do they make good neighbors?
Linda Koops “coup”:
Recently a case went to Plan Commission, which involved the Prestonwood Baptist Church on Hillcrest between Forest and Churchill Way. The case was to document a change on the original Plan Development District Document for the property. The Church was adding a 40-foot cross (the vertical element is 16 inches wide by 16 inches in depth) near the front facade of the main building and relocating two signage monuments. I have checked with the City Attorney and under the City’s regulations and codes, the church had the legal right and was in full compliance with “height restrictions” and all the requirements of the “minor amendment” process to put up the cross; relocate the two signage monuments; and mitigate for tree removal. Appropriate “documentation” of the changes on the Plan Development Document was the only item the city could legally consider when the case came before Plan Commission. This type of request is a “minor amendment” and does not go to City Council.
In meeting all the requirements of the city’s regulations and codes for the “minor amendment”, the Plan Commission had to affirm its administrative duty and place the schematics for the cross on the Plan Development District Document as required by city code. Neighbors came to the hearing and voiced their concerns about to the cross, its illumination and the removal of seven trees. I very much appreciate the neighbors taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the Plan Commission meeting and voice their concerns. Even though the Plan Commission carried out its legal duty the neighbors felt more could have been done to encourage the Church to compromise in a good faith effort on the trees and the illumination hours. It was in that spirit that Plan Commissioner Bruce Bernbaum and I met with the pastor of the church this week.
As a result of our meeting the Church has agreed to remove only five of the original seven trees slated for removal. Of those five, two will be relocated behind the cross. There is some question as to the health of these two trees. I will ask the City Arborist to verify if the two trees can survive being relocated. If they can not, they will be replaced with trees of the same “caliper inch” or greater. The Church will (per city code) not allow ”spill-over light” from the illumination of the cross. In addition it will cease lighting the cross at 10:00pm. I have also asked the church for a schedule for the lighting of the parking lot. They have complied and the letter is attached.
Again, I want to thank all of those who attended the Plan Commission meeting on behalf of the neighborhood or wrote me in favor or opposed to the application. Please know that I appreciate your input. Be assured that I will always continue to support the neighborhood.
Best Regards,
Linda Koop
Dallas City Councilmember, District 11

Living next to a church is no fun at all. They make a lot of noise and throw their trash in your yard. Granted, historically, these aren't folks who have taken that much responsibility for the outcomes of their actions.

By God, if you won't convert willingly, we'll jam a 40-foot cross down your throat. Nothing worse than obnoxious, holier-than-thou baptists.

"Please give us 10% of your income so we can display an unnecessarily large cross to both ram our religion down your throat AND prove to god that we're holier than everyone else!"
What a waste...

I'd rather have the 40-ft Cross there than all the Muzslimes trying to kill every American living in my City.

Good. Put up as many as possible. This is Texas. If they want the Politically Correct code words of "Open minded, diversity and multiculturalism," please go take our old house in Liberal San Diego. It's a blessing that it is a cross and not another Mosque where they try to convert everybody to the fake religion of Islam. God Bless this cross and the great state of Texas. All liberals in Texas are not even close to liberals in Ca.(San Fran. L.A and San Diego.) You are all blue dog democrat. As far left as the country used to be. Think JFK liberal, NOT Communist Obama Liberal. Austin is actually Moderate compared to San Diego. I, as a Conservative who moved to North East Texas(Very Rural, Conservative, Country), enjoyed Austin and laughed at a liberal for him trying to be as liberal as they could be. I told him you sound Moderate at the most and he got annoyed. I am telling you, all Liberals in Texas are NOT liberal by California standards. You truly have no idea what they want done to this country. Again, liberals here are blue dog democrat. You can't even fathom their thought process. Very scary indeed.

The other comments before me. You guys seriously don't have any idea what you are talking about, do you? Do you really take Texas for granted that much? Go live in San Diego, or more to the point, S.F for a taste of what you think you know you are talking about, but in reality, you don't have a clue. After that, you would def. come back to Texas with a real American Conservative view point. Again, you are all blue dog democrat if you say you are liberal in Texas.

It's symbolism and meaningless. The Church should be more concerned about their response to their neighbors than their own desires, that would signal a greater response than the tallest icon. Alas, the drum beats on and the white washed tombs continue to profess one thing while they scrub and scrub the outside.
God's word is Truth, Jesus is that Word, and He is Lord.

WOW- a skewed view by an easily offended writer....bet we would not hear a peep out of you if it were a mosqe next to you! SO What if they want to put up a cross, and expand!! How horrible!! I think some of the anti-church people would be well served to spend some time in a slum. See if your so "offended" then.

Before Pwood purchased that building, I attended that church for 20+ years. The real story is what is missing here. In my opinion, the actions of the neighbor have been coordinated and unfair in their response. Go drive by the location and see for yourself. The property is as clean and well kept as the Cooper Aerobics center at the other end of Willow. I know for a fact, that when we expanded the parking lot, we purposely spent additional funds to make the wall as nice as the neighborhood, and even added benches and landscaping and still could not please the neighbors. I wonder if Cooper has received the same harassment? I do agree that a huge cross is not worth the fight but the neighbors have gone way overboard. I wonder if Highland Park Pres and UMC has the same issues in their neighborhood. I will bet not. These neighbors have been especially hard to work with. I am just saying, lets be fair and objective. The facts speak for themselves and are public record.

What's the big deal about crosses? It's the instrument of CHRIST'S DEATH! If he had been executed in modern times, would everybody wear little electric chairs around their necks? Would they be building a 40 ft guillotine in front of the church? Perhaps a 40 ft gallows? Why not instead celebrate his ressurection, or His coming return, with a trumpeting angel? Oh wait, that would be what the Mormons put on their buildings.
Funny how the christian Mormons endure with quiet dignity the insults the "more christian" Baptists throw at them. The Baptists deliberately lie to their congregations and to the media about what Mormons and other religions really believe, to scare people into fearing them, and then call every other non-Baptist denomination (including the Catholics) a cult! Baptists are such pompous hypocrites...

When Prestonwood and First Baptist get to far from their mission, and build temples( ie golden images) for themselves, where in the bible does is say to build this $105m in downtown Dallas and when does it say to erect a 40ft cross. I had a friend say one churches are not church they are tax exempt big business. The members should quit these churches take their money out and find a good bible based church. That does God's work alp

Unbelievable. All this church wants to do is to put up a cross. Their other two campuses are known for their prominent displays of a cross on top of a tower. It seems to me that Prestonwood started out compromising by scaling back and considering the neighborhood.
The church that used to be in that location had so much pressure from the neighborhood that they practically had to hide their building. Trees and shrubs obscured the church, their sign was so small that you could easily drive by without seeing it, and they were forced to filter all of their members through one parking lot exit so that they would not have cars on any of the surrounding streets. They would bottlekneck for an hour and create a safety hazard just to make their neighbors happy.
It seems to me that people are making false accusations against Prestonwood simply because they don't like the idea of a large church. Prestonwood sends millions of dollars around the world to help the needy. They send people and funds for disaster relief to places like Haiti and New Orleans. They encourage others to live like Jesus. The church is well respected by Christians and Non-Christians nation-wide. No one here has given a single reason for the negativity towards this church. This board is noticeably absent of specific accusations and there are no facts to back up the trash talk. I think it is safe to say that the Christians are not the ones doing the judging here.
