DFW music fans should roadtrip to Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin
Yes, it's another Austin music festival. But we promise this one's worth your time.
Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin November 4-6 promises to be an exciting three days, with headliners Spoon and Major Lazer as well a hearty amount of local favorites. The adequately sized Auditorium Shores park hosts the sixth-annual festival, allowing concertgoers to take advantage of the temperate Texas weather in November.
The festival brings in bands from Dallas-Fort Worth and surrounding cities, and it's worth the three-hour drive.
The lineup features over 150 bands and comedians, and it should satisfy any music fan, with electro, heavy metal, indie rock, and rap represented. Local band Neon Indian heads up the indie rock scene, spreading his infectiously orbital electro style. Other local indie acts include Okkervil River and alt-rock favorite Jim Ward. Another Texas act out of Marfa -- Yacht -- has recently sprung up on the satellite radio circuit with their auto-tuned yet ear-perking songs. They’ll be a close one to watch; they're likely one of the breakout acts of the weekend.
As far as the dominating headliners, we recommend Swedish star Lykke Li, Passion Pit, and Diplo. Each of these groups is guaranteed to get you out of your camp chair. Smaller acts worth planning for are the quirky and contagious Tune-Yards and the up-and-coming melodic duo Purity Ring. If you need a break from the music, catch one of the many comedians on the bill. There’s also an air sex competition, which should guarantee some laughs.
Wondering what separates this festival from all of other Austin-based show cases including Austin City Limits (ACL)? It’s the value of seeing national and international bands without paying a ridiculous price. The three-day pass is $135, which is about $50 less than the current ACL rate. Reconsider your weekend plans and add an impromptu road trip to Austin for this exhilarating lineup.
