Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, April 12-18

The start of horse racing season, watching E.T. outside, and showing off your teddy bear are your best bets this week.

Is this the post-holiday lull? Following a flurry of activities during Easter week, this week sees mostly a bunch of holdover events from previous round-ups. While we still heartily recommend those options, we're all about the here and now, so we've dug deep and found you some new choices.

While it can be an acquired taste, horse racing has its devoted fans. Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie celebrates the tradition with Thoroughbred Season Opening Weekend, taking place Thursday through Sunday. While every day will have some kind of activity, Sunday is specifically Family Fun Day, with ostrich races, bounce houses, and a petting zoo, among other things, being offered.

The Dallas International Film Festival kicks off Wednesday, and the festival will hold its annual Family Day on Saturday at NorthPark Center in Dallas. A variety of activities will be going on all day long, including a Zumba class, cheerleaders, and an appearance by animals from the Dallas Zoo. The day will culminate with an outdoor screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at sundown.

Finally, almost every kid has their favorite teddy bear, a fact the A.W. Perry Homestead Museum in Carrollton celebrates with the Teddy Bear Picnic on Saturday. In addition to the picnic, activities include a best dressed bear contest and first aid for bears that have been loved a bit too much.
