Restaurant review: Townhouse Kitchen + Bar in Dallas

The vibe, food, and fluff are all great, but the service was super disappointing.

Townhouse Kitchen + Bar in Dallas

Townhouse Kitchen + Bar has a vibe worthy of a customer come back. With an exciting menu, sometimes 80's music, and a perfectly fun atmosphere, there's only one fault causing fright: The Service.

Who says this over & over & over: "Is everything amazingly fantastic?" Who? Please do not ever let these letters form words to complete this particular sentence if the service sucks. There's simply no way you don't know that things are far from amazingly fantastic. An 8 year old at the table knew the service sucked when she felt repeated feelings of a throat choke due to lack of liquid for almost one hour.

As he stood having a random table conversation across the room, for what felt like 14 minutes, one couldn't help but ponder thoughts of his need to master the walk by. The waiter walk by is not rocket science. No one can trap a service industry worker without a lack of waiter walk by knowledge. To wear the title of superstar server, the walk by must be perfected. Never stop. There is the slow-by, walk-by, scamper-I'm-busy-by, and the check-presenter-mid- air-ready-to-place-on-the-table-by.

It's a massive service industry shame to have a total of six tables in an entire restaurant, with four servers, one bartender, and a manager. Pain. Trumping the horrible service is plain and simple: everything else.

Wow. Just wow. Deviled eggs come & go without smashing long lasting memories, but Townhouse made our day. After checking out John's write up on Delicious Mischief, we knew the deviled eggs app was first to taste and it did not disappoint. The shared plates section is filled with interesting choices, minus the bbq duck quesadilla and pulled bbq pork sliders.

Deciding it was once again time to lengthen existing pig product vocabulary, Google was the only option. Common knowledge it is not while determining the definition of pulled pork. What changes the status of a pork product to pulled?

Internet Interpretation of Pulled Pork: Google maintains that this form of barbecue, which we call pulled pork, is at times referred to as none other than... Boston Butt. Low temperature removes all pig aspirations immediately, as connective tissue is drastically weakened. Suddenly, the pig's meat can be pulled from its being, only to be placed on a plate, alone, without the rest of its ... body.

Ahh, macaroni & cheese. While having an option to add apple wood bacon or shrimp, the fourth grader at our table just wanted to live. Having another Sprite delivered is what one might consider her pipe dream. Don't even think about asking for a Shirley Temple. Double Pipe Dream.

Next up was the red pepper roasted hummus. So many suitable dishes for non meat eaters. Also exciting is the yellowfin tuna stack served with crisp tortillas, as well as calamari, flatbread, loaded blue cheese chips, and wild mushroom bruschetta.

Shrimp Kung Pao tacos with red chiles & toasted peanuts will make all heart's skip a beat. Holy cow this is spicy hot and delicious. Tacos are served four to an order, with several options such as chipotle carnitas with green onion rajas and avocado salsa, spiced tuna tacos with tomatillo salsa and napa cabbage, or pollo picado with pickled jalapeno and jack cheese.

We opted on the green goddess chicken salad sandwich, but oh how the most excitingly joyous menu moment occurred realizing Townhouse has shrimp & grits. This dream was shot down faster than our server repeated the words amazingly fantastic 42 times during lunch.

Dream turned into nightmare while listening to our server describe the shrimp & grits. Visions of dried up mashed potatoes with dried up shrimp sitting on another plate were forced into every possible plate prediction. He said potatoes. This frightened me. It hurt. There was no turning back after witnessing this spectacle of dish description. Geez.

The vibe, food, and fluff at Townhouse Kitchen + Bar is all great, but the service was super disappointing. Sadly seeing the table beside us getting their check comped, with added apologies from the manager, was just weird. Once they figure out this mini glitch, this place will be solid.

This is the second review I've tried to read from this blog. Frankly, I couldn't make it through either one. The reviews read like comic books (how many exclamation points do you need in a restaurant review?) or a transcript of a valley girl's testimony in a frivolous law suit.

How about a warning in the "Week in View" newsletter about who's writing these things? I'll want to skip Almost Veggie reviews in the future.

Fair enough, sassml, but I'm confused by one thing - you complain about the number of exclamation marks in this review, and yet I count not a single one. Am I missing something?

Wow, so did u like it or not? I actually recently checked out Townhouse in the Galleria, and I was seeing the reviews that were written and I probably spend the most time reading yours, I think this rating is DEAD wrong!!!!! For what I experienced, and for what I spend, My friends and I were Extremely Happy! Loved the chill open decor, able to see the entire restaurant from anywhere, including the tv's in the bar. The server was seasoned and not only knowledgeable and professional, but was able to really make us feel special. We were more then comfortable letting his recommendations lead us. Everything he suggested was right on, even suggested we split a salad cause they were large. Rather then trying to get just get the check up, we all felt he was more concerned with making sure we were happy. That's awesome!! Great time, great food, and great service.... Ask for J

I think you can go to hell, because I heard that the waiter quit his job after reading your review and then offed him self so go to hell and stop reposting this review!

I have to disagree with this review. I have had the chance to eat at this restaurant on several occasions and have never once had an issue with the food or service! The food is top quality, the service is personable and very helpful, and the pricing is reasonable too. I can appreciate a helpful review, if it IS helpful, however I have never read a more erroneous attempt to describe this restaurant in my life! My wife and I truly enjoy the atmosphere, the people and the food. So, when you go in, do not expect something mediocre, but expect something "Amazingly fantastic" as this review is nothing more than a fairy tale worthy of a Mother Goose remake! By the way, J and Travis are the best waiters there. They always do an great job at making us and our children happy. Thanks again guys.

I would like to make a few comments about this review: 1. It was an old review from February that was cut and pasted here from a food blogger. (Just because you change a date does not equal a new review) 2. I know for a fact that every table gets carafe bottle service of water. So no guest is ever without a drink. 3. The only negative things I can say about this review is it was written by someone who is trying too hard. ie. using Google to pick apart food terms that are not familiar to you. Writing a long and unhelpful review that is unclear to the readers. 4. I have known the awesome people behind the driving force of Pegasus news for many years, and I can't believe that you posted such a waste of a review. I hope next time the review is done by someone that has a better understanding of cuisine and dining.

I would like to thank the other people who commented about this review because all of them have a different opinion about Townhouse Kitchen & Bar

Teresa Gubbins, staff:

gregorysawin, thanks for your comment. as someone who's known the site for many years, you perhaps know that we partner up with blogs and post their content. Almost Veggie is one of our newer content partners, so we posted a couple of reviews she already had on her site.

would you be the same Gregory Sawin who does event planning for Townhouse (according to Townhouse's Facebook page)? because I noticed that you'd also posted a positive "review" of Townhouse last week

Whew. This is heavy stuff. What I write is my interpretation of the experience and will always be written truthfully. Oh well, let the tumbleweed roll.
