Pegasus Favorite Five: Best DFW bars to watch the Olympics
Your couch is not a bar.
During the summer Olympic Games, the world stops for a few weeks. All that’s left is your big-screen television, an endless supply of [insert beverage here], and your eyes, glued to the TV to find out who’s going to win. (Except that you already found out who won accidentally while Googling something at work. You pretend you don’t know.)
Friends, get out of your sweatpants. Wouldn’t you rather be at a bar where everyone around you is cheering, “USA, USA, USA?”
Here are your best bars for watching the Olympics in Dallas-Fort Worth:
The Londoner in Addison: Situated in a building that looks like an old house, this bar will make you feel like you’re at home. Its British vibe and décor, and the massive TVs and drink specials make it safe international “waters” to congregate with friends or strangers and cheer on your favorite country. The Londoner is showing most events throughout the day and night and have some specials, like The Bucket List: a bucket o’ beer in either “gold,” “silver,” or “bronze,” categorized by origin of beer. Hardcore fans can easily try all three buckets before the Games are over.
San Francisco Rose in Dallas: That’s what the Olympics are missing: karaoke during commercial breaks! The San Francisco Rose on Greenville Avenue is a relaxed environment with good drinks, good food, and, yes, occasional karaoke. Their TVs are usually tuned into several different channels so you can watch Michael Phelps win another gold medal in one corner and catch synchronized diving in another.
Kelly’s East Side in Plano and Allen: The great thing about Kelly’s East Side in Plano is it has all the appeal of a bar without really being a bar. It’s more of a restaurant. Their great menu boasts half-off food and $3 pints depending on the night. And while the Olympics are on, you’re likely to see the Texas Rangers on another TV.
Flips Patio Grill in Fort Worth and Grapevine: What you will love about Flips, aside from the burgers, is that it doesn’t get too rowdy. They usually post their Olympics schedule and specials on Facebook so you can have a good guide as to when you should show up for cheap grub and golds.
Frankie’s in Uptown Dallas, Lewisville, and Fort Worth: We’ve all been to Frankie’s to watch a sporting event at one time or another, and that’s why it's so great: It never lets you down. If you are looking to be in a big crowd, with sloshing beers and rowdy camaraderie, you’ve found your place. Frankie’s is guaranteed to be packed nearly every night during the Olympics. On August 4 and 5, check out Bar Olympics at the Uptown location, which includes bar games and eating contests. You can become your own gold medalist … in flip cup!
