Review: Rex’s Seafood Market in Dallas’ lobster roll
This is the best lobster roll in Dallas -- better than Nonna or Driftwood.
DALLAS Before ever entering the building, Rex’s Seafood Market somehow managed to perform a massive ear violation. This violation occurred during a voluntary website visit. People with music on their website need to calm down. If music is a must, the option to make it disappear should be quickly visible.
If you decide to have screaming seagulls, um, the world would appreciate a warning. Sure, seagulls probably make lots of people feel like they’re at the beach. Growing up at the beach, one might consider me to be a seagull sound expert. Rex, seagulls do not sound like a herd of birds circling for attack.
Moving right along …
Rex’s Seafood Market has a reputation for having the best lobster roll in Dallas. Four different attempts to order this lobster roll were a complete fail. Rex only serves lobster rolls during lunch on Fridays, so I came back on Friday during lunch. The guy at the counter said the last lobster roll had just been sold. Growl.
The following Friday, I found myself standing at the counter for the third attempt to taste. A quick fail became reality as the manager explained they just sold the last two lobster rolls to the lady in front of me.
Really? Who does the ordering around here? Where’s the prep guy? Does the prep guy need an assistant? I would be happy to help each Friday morning to ensure others do not experience mental lobster roll anguish such as this. This lobster roll better be freaking amazing. Like being in Maine lobster amazing, people!
After kindly expressing customer confusion, the manager agreed that nobody — nobody — should have to try this hard to taste their lobster roll. From the kindness of his management heart, he advised me to return at exactly 4:30 p.m. to receive a lobster roll gift.
Clearly, a full blown lobster roll investigation was in order. What’s the deal? Owner Rex Bellomy came over to answer one tough journalistic level question: Why Rex!? Why are you doing this to lobster roll lovers everywhere? Rex!!! He explained that in the beginning he decided to have lobster rolls every day, but it just didn’t work. It’s expensive, so the costs compared to not knowing how many people would order left him with doubts.
Rex’s manager maintains they are known for their side items. He explained the side items are just as important to them as the main course. Rex’s Seafood is a total scratch kitchen in every way. They shut down from 3-5 p.m. each day to ensure superstar quality, hence you will not catch them cooking and storing. While speaking of sides, he offered a taste of their jalapeno cheesy grits. Like!
Rex’s Seafood follows an authentic New England recipe when preparing the Maine lobster roll. The best news ever is hearing 5–6 ounces of cooked Maine lobster meat is used, without a ton of mayonnaise. In fact, there’s hardly any mayo at all.
The bread is provided by none other than Eatzi’s! All the pain and effort taken towards stuffing this lobster roll down my throat was worth it. Better than Nonna and Driftwood’s lobster roll, Rex’s Seafood is the best I’ve had in Dallas — amen, hallelujah, and curtsy.
