Chick-fil-A on SMU campus not feeling the heat of debate

The facility is owned by ARAMARK, which manages SMU dining services.

SMU’s Chick-fil-A location will be open to students and faculty alike at the start of the fall semester.

— Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A, has been raising eyebrows with his recent statements on marriage equality.

SMU students are now beginning to wonder if and how his statements will affect the on-campus Chick-fil-A.

In one of his many anti-marriage equality statements, Cathy said, “we’re inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. And I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude that thinks we have the audacity to redefine what marriage is all about.”

The backlash is not just about his statements, but also the donations that followed.

After Cathy spoke his mind, Chick-fil-A held a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”

Herman Cain told Fox News that all the profits from this day were donated to anti-gay organizations.

“They are going do take a lot of the excess profits they got on that day and contribute it to the charitable organizations they support in even bigger numbers,” Cain said to Fox News.

He also added that the sales figures from the appreciation day were over $30 million.

Some colleges have responded by cutting ties with Chick-fil-A. At North Carolina’s Davidson College, 500 students signed a petition to stop serving Chick-fil-A at its monthly After Midnight events. Davidson College was the first college in a series that has decided to stop serving any Chick-fil-A items, in response to the petition.

Some students are speaking out against there being a Chick-fil-A on-campus. Harvey Luna, co-president of SPECTRUM, sent over a statement about the issue of having a Chick-fil-A on-campus.

“While we respect and value the First Amendment rights of every American, we must not lose sight of what this issue is really about,” Luna said.

“Our concern with Chick-fil-A is not so much with Dan Cathy’s anti-marriage statement as with the company’s continued effort in donating millions of dollars to organizations that are classified as hate-groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and that actively discriminate and dehumanize LGBT people.”

“For a company that affirms the values of the organizations it financially supports — such as the criminalization of LGBT people and the abuse of young individuals with conversion therapy, a procedure classified as harmful by the American Psychological Association — shows nothing other than Chick-fil-A’s true values.”

He concluded by adding that “the actions of this company are deplorable and does not reflect the values of SMU. Therefore, it goes without saying that Spectrum does not an will not associate with Chick-fil-A.”

When asked about the Chick-fil-A on campus, SMU also sent a statement regarding the issue: “SMU embraces diversity as a central strength and value and includes sexual orientation in its commitment to nondiscrimination. Because the Chick-fil-A is operated by ARAMARK, which manages SMU dining services, workers at this location are employees of ARAMARK, which shares SMU’s commitment to nondiscrimination.”

The statement continued to state “there will be no change in the status of the campus Chick-Fil-A. SMU officials will continue to be available to speak with concerned students or others on this matter.

Julie Wiksten, associate vice president of campus services, agreed with SMU’s official statement on the matter.

“The Chick-fil-A on campus is operated by ARAMARK, the company that manages SMU Dining Services. As a contractor with the university, ARAMARK must follow SMU’s commitment to nondiscrimination. Chick-fil-A has been on campus since 2001 and has been a very popular national brand,” Wiksten said.

“We constantly assess all of our brands and services on campus to ensure they are providing product and services that our customers want.”

If companies are people and people vote with dollars then the destination of the restaurant’s donations are open for public debate. It very well should be an issue as to where peoples’ hard-earned money goes after the chicken goes down their gullet. This issue has made our little feathered friend the modern martyr as Chick-fil-A laughs all the way to the bank. Watch the poultry be nailed to the cross and pierced by the spear of destiny at the hands of those devious cows on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/20...

The rhetoric coming from the left needs to be toned down.

No wonder we get GLBT volunteers walking into faith based groups, hunting their opposition.

Why is it that all speech the left disagrees with they go over the top in their condemnation....where is your tolerance you like to preach ?

Most Americans supported DOMA.....Obama supported it as well, up until he realized he was running short on campgain funds.... .civil unions offered an accomodation to the GLBT community, but it seems the community is more interested in destroying the definition of marriage at the same time practicing intolerance towards others.

You think the SPLC was correct in listing the FRC as a hate group ?

Ah yes, the "separate but equal" civil unions. Don't drink from the gay water fountains, you'll catch something.

DOMA and civil unions was NOTHING like seperate but equal............nothing like different water fountains, different bus seats, different classrooms................

Do you think the SPLC was correct in listing the FRC as a hate group?

Southern Poverty Law Center listed the Family Research Council as a hate group; put them on their list.....

The Family Reserach Council is where the shooter walked in with gun blazing and said "i don't like your politics"....the shooter was a volunteer at the local GLBT community center and was also carrying Chick Fil A lunch bags !

You seeing any connections here ?

Many believe the SPLC put the target on the FRC.

I don't think the FRC is a hate group.....do you ?

Fair enough....not suprised so few have not heard about it....the media is paying almost zero attention to it, especially the SPLC aspect...you know, gotta ignore the stories that cut against their politics and all............

No doubt; if a volunteer from the Family Research Council walked over to the GLBT community center, with Chic Fil A bags and a gun, started shooting and said, "I don't like your politics"......well, you know it would lead with Brian Williams, MSNBC, CNN and all the other lame media...

I would definitely consider the FRC and NOM as hate groups. Any organization that spends its time and money to discriminate against a group of people based on who those people are (black, white, brown, gay, straight, female, male, etc.) as well as support organizations that cause harm to those same individuals should be considered a hate group. You can justify anything that you want to in the name of the bible and the first amendment, but you sure show your true colors when you try to advocate for an organization like FRC

By that definition, wouldn't a group of friends that went to eat at Chick-Fil-A be considered a hate group?

I think it's irrelevant who's operating the Chick-Fil-A on SMU. They're still paying franchise/licensing fees to Chick-Fil-A, a company who's money is eventually funding anti-gay groups.

Again, this whole debacle will be viewed in the future how we view the John Crow laws today. Right now people have the opportunity to get on the side that won't be viewed as pathetic bigots by history books yet are choosing to cherry-pick quotes out of a big book-o-myths instead of thinking logically about what is right. Sad really, what does that say for Americans' ability to think for themselves?

Everytime a DOMA comes up for a vote in the states, it is overwhelming approved..................doesn't the majority opinions count for something ?

BTW; there is nothing discriminatory by defining marraige as being between and man and a women, especially if civil union legislation permits full rights..........our government makes all kinds of distinctions by defining citizens (handicapp, veteran, black, legal alien, etc., ) without making them sit in the back of the bus.

Same can be said of civil unions. But the radical gay agenda is too destroy the definition of marriage, for the sole purpose of normalizing behavior that isn't the norm.

And GoProud is a hate group; they afterall support those who support DOMA........................

And presumably, Obama was the leader of one of the biggest hate groups (the DNP), at least he was a hater in 2011 and early 2012. Right ?

And heaven knows, peer pressure works... Usually with the less interesting followers and imitators ithin a society, but it does work.

And Kane, I'm pretty sure Snookie will beat the GLBT agenda to discrediting marriage as an institution.

Civil unions are separate and not equal actually. They do not guarantee any rights to the couples that a marriage does under the law of the state they are issued in. Hence why most states that do offer a civil union to same sex couples has figured that out and are moving to marriage rights if they have not already. See Vermont. You could also see New Jersey, if not for that blow hard douche they have in the Governor's office.
