Own a piece of Lee Harvey Oswald’s former apartment

DALLAS — From the SMU “death penalty” to the Museum Tower debacle that rendered a Picasso near-flambéed, Dallas has, like most cities, seen its share of less-than-desirable claims to fame. But, such peccadilloes fail to register since Dallas played host to the epicenter of a home-grown national presidential tragedy and federal investigation. For nearly a half century, John F. Kennedy’s assassination has remained indelibly linked to the city’s identity, and now you can own a piece of our collective history through an eBay auction morbidly hawking pieces from Lee Harvey Oswald’s old Oak Cliff apartment.

Oswald's complex, located at 602 to 604 Elsbeth in Dallas, was slated to meet the wrecking ball last week, and owner Jane Ann Bryant decided to sell its red bricks as cultural artifacts.

The bricks sold out almost immediately, but other items – like the 1925 cast iron bathtub from Oswald’s Unit #2, now up to $235; and original 1925 windows from the building, but not necessarily Oswald’s unit, starting at $165 – are all available in varying stages of disrepair for a few lucky history buffs.

It's all about the bragging rights, or something like that: Reginald wanted to place the original hall closet from Oswald’s historic Unit #2 in the vestibule by the baby grand, but we eventually compromised and put it in the nursery as a porte-cochere for the pram.
