Rockwall High School football coach Scott Smith resigns
Smith plans to continue coaching but hasn't revealed where.
ROCKWALL Rockwall High School football coach and RISD Athletic Director Scott Smith has announced his resignation, effective December 31, and says he plans on accepting a coaching position at another school soon.
Coach Smith came to Rockwall as football coach in 2005 and took over as athletic director in 2009. His teams went 38-45 in his eight seasons (3-7 this year), leading the team to three playoff appearances, but never making it past the first round. Prior to coming to Rockwall, he served on the coaching staffs at Baylor, SMU, and the University of Arkansas. He also served on the high school level as head coach in Garland, Duncanville, Highland Park, and Odessa-Permian.
In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Smith has been involved in the development and implementation of the district’s sports marketing program — an initiative that generates approximately $200,000 annually for the general fund. He also championed the “Honor Before Victory” program which concentrates on teaching student athletes the value of good sportsmanship.
Smith told the Dallas Morning News that he felt a coaching change at Rockwall was necessary and didn’t want to just remain athletic director, so he decided to resign and pursue a coaching position elsewhere.
“I just feel like its the right thing to do at this time for the school district as well as myself,” Smith said.
Rockwall ISD Superintendent of Schools Jeff Bailey said Smith has been a positive influence on students, and the district wishes him well in the future.
“As a coach and athletic director, Scott Smith has not only been dedicated to developing outstanding student athletes, but has put equal emphasis on developing athletes who display character and integrity,” said Bailey.
“He has been a positive influence on hundreds of students during his tenure in the district and we are grateful for his service to our students and families. We wish him well in all his future endeavors and thank him for all he has done for Rockwall ISD.”
