Texas Tech’s new coach, Kliff Kingsbury, maybe once hung out with Jessica Simpson, sort of

And hey! Jessica's from here.

Jessica Simpson + Kliff Kingsbury = photo buddies. What else are they? Not sure.

Jessica Simpson + Kliff Kingsbury = photo buddies. What else are they? Not sure.

I’m a Red Raider, so my Twitter and Facebook feeds have been blowing up today with the news that Kliff Kingsbury is headed home to be the head coach at Texas Tech. Yay, football!

With that news comes the people who dig into the handsome man’s past, like this site that was quick to point out that Kingsbury once took a photo with Jessica Simpson, and maybe at one point hung out with Britney Spears. (An old ESPN post notes that all three celebs have the good ‘ole South in common.)

Yeah, OK, there’s not much substance there on our local girl Simpson, but I do find the Spears connection pretty funny. According to a Lubbock Avalanche-Journal story from 2002, Spears was Kingsbury’s “motivation” while he was quarterback at Tech. His crush ran deep, it seems, as he was willing to go on record as saying he had a Britney T-shirt, photo, and concert ticket. His autographed photo from the pop queen said “Kliff, make room for the Heisman next year. Love, Britney.”

The Heisman wouldn’t come until a decade later … sort of. He coached Johnny Manziel to a Heisman as A&M’s offensive coordinator.

As a Tech grad, I’m hoping he can guide two Heisman winners in a row.
