Opinion: Texas’ uninsured children indicative of deeper moral crisis

The character of a people can be measured in the way they value their children.

Eight percent of children in the U. S. have no health insurance coverage. That compares to Texas with 14% of its children uninsured.

Here's some even more shocking news: According to the good folks at Children's Medical Center, 5 North Texas counties have twice the national average with it comes to uninsured children.

Here's the harsh reality:

  • Fannin County (Bonham): 16.3% uninsured children
  • Collin County (McKinney, one of the wealthiest areas in the nation): 16.7% uninsured
  • Denton County (Denton): 17.4% uninsured
  • Grayson County (Sherman): 19.1% of children have no health coverage
  • Cooke County (Gainesville): almost 1/4 of children with no coverage at 23.9%

The character of a people must include some measure of just how much they value their children, all of their children.

We can do better.

If you are you speaking of the character of the parents that do not provide insurance for their childern, then I agree it speaks volumes. If you are questioning the character of Texans in general, then I find no issues with the general populas. It is not the obligation of the state in general to provide for the miscreats that do not provide for those that they produce, either through wedock or indiscrimient breeding. Find the parents, both of them, and hold them accountable, don't be critical of the State, it is only the location of their failure as parents, not the cause of it.

To blame the lack of insurance on "moral character" is, for the most part, ridiculous. I raised 2 children. In Colin County. When possible, I had health Insurance. But, it wasn't always possible. As the cost of living rose, & lay-offs caused lower paying jobs, it was a choice between something I absolutely had to have, (utilities, car ins, food etc) & something I could take a chance with....our health Insurance. Fortunately we re very healthy, & the occasional colds, etc were manageable. It was scary, & it wasn't a choice made lightly, but it's a choice many of us make out of necessity. So, before you judge, take alook around, it's not going to get any better any time soon by the look of it. And it has nothing to do with morals!
