Irving-based Hostess adds chocolate creme Twinkies to year-round line
Former limited-edition item is bumped up to big leagues.
Irving-based Hostess Brands has bumped up the chocolate-cream version of Twinkies to a full-time year-round item. Chocolate Cream Twinkies were offered on a limited basis last spring, but now they're part of the regular lineup.
They're making the most of the Valentine's Day holiday and using it as a time to launch them, what with their chocolate personality: "The popular golden cakes' signature creme filling is getting a chocolatey makeover just in time for the sweetest holiday of the year – and the flavor is here to stay," says the release, which also claims that the chocolate Twinkies received "an overwhelmingly positive consumer response."
The chocolate version has the same pale golden sponge cake as a regular Twinkie, but instead of a vanilla cream center, the flavor of the cream center is milk chocolate. It's a rather pale-looking chocolate cream, and some have wondered why Hostess didn't make the sponge-cake chocolate, too.
The Twinkie was invented in 1930; Hostess now produces more than 500 million Twinkies a year.

James Scott, you're saying that chocolate is, how do you say, dull? i'd like to see them put in a really interesting filling like pumpkin or Key lime but it seems way beyond their corporate culture

At first glance at the photo, I thought it was a hot dog in the center.
