Kids and family events in Dallas-Fort Worth, February 16-22
Classical music, hockey, and Mardi Gras events are your best bets this week.
As the saying goes, "Diversity is the spice of life." Lots of us get by doing the same old, same old week after week. But when you take a chance and step out of your comfort zone, you often find fascinating things that you would never have otherwise discovered. In that vein, here are some events that have nothing in common except for their potential to be a lot of fun.
Classical music can be an acquired taste, so why not acquire that taste by supporting local youths? The Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater will host Lewisville Lake Symphony: Stars of the Future on Friday night. Featured will be winners of a recent young artists competition, playing classics from Mozart, Chopin, and others.
While hockey has had a presence in Texas for quite a while, it's still not as popular as it is in the northern states. This weekend has been designated Hockey Weekend Across America, and the Allen Community Ice Rink is celebrating by hosting a series of events. They include a Hockey Jersey Flash Mob on Friday night, Try Hockey Day on Saturday, and a Girls' Skills Clinic and Fire and Police Exhibition Game on Sunday.
Finally, Mardi Gras is officially next Tuesday, but things will get started early with a variety of weekend events. On Saturday morning, you can run in the Dash for the Beads race in the Bishop Arts District in Dallas, a 5K benefiting a proposed Oak Cliff dog park. Speaking of dogs, there will be plenty of them decked out in Mardi Gras regalia on Sunday at the Krewe of Barkus at Dr. Glenn Mitchell Memorial Park in McKinney. The event will feature a parade of dogs, along with other activities. And the Bishop Arts District will host their own Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday, where beads are sure to be flying.
