UPDATED: Kelly Clarkson of Burleson will sing national anthem at Super Bowl
Along with Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and M.I.A.
North Texas pop singer Kelly Clarkson will sing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVI on February 5 in Indianapolis, the Associated Press reports.
[UPDATE: The NFL confirmed Tuesday that Clarkson will indeed sing the anthem. It's her first Super Bowl appearance.]
Born in Fort Worth and raised in Burleson, Clarkson became an overnight celebrity when she won Season 1 of American Idol in 2002. The soul sister has gone on to release five albums and sell more than 20 million records.
Clarkson's latest project is her new album, Stronger, which evokes feelings of independence, hurt, and inner strength -- traits that Clarkson herself has become known for.
Clarkson's first single "Mr. Know It All" ranked No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and her newer single, "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" is regularly played on mainstream radio.
We're already expecting a better national anthem than last year's Super Bowl, hosted in Arlington, in which Christina Aguilera botched a line in the song.
The AP also announced that husband-wife couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton will sing "America the Beautiful" at the February 5 football game. Other performers will include Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and M.I.A.
