Albert Nobbs, an independent film that was primarily financed by Fort Worth couple Cami and John Goff, is in line for some Oscar gold after it was nominated for three Academy Awards Tuesday morning. Star/writer/producer Glenn Close was nominated for Best Actress, while co-star Janet McTeer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (the film was also nominated for Best Makeup). Albert Nobbs will be released in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Friday.

The 2012 nominees featured more than a few surprises. The big change this year was that, following two years in which the Best Picture category was guaranteed to have 10 nominees, no one was sure how many films would end up nominated due to a new Academy rule stating that a film must receive at least 5% of the first place votes to be included.

There ended up being nine Best Picture nominees, with Hugo surprisingly leading the way with 11 total nominations, followed closely by The Artist, which received 10 total nominations. Other films that had strong showings included Moneyball (6 total nominations), War Horse (6), The Descendants (5), and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (5). Below are the nominees in the major categories; go to oscar.go.com for the list of all the nominations. Links attached to films will take you to our reviews on Pegasus News.

As Unfair Park points out, there's another local Oscar connection with The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an animated short co-directed by Brandon Oldenburg, who also designed the Traveling Man sculpture in Deep Ellum. As of right now, you can download the film for free at the official site, but that may not last long.

What do you think?
