Dallas restaurant news and events, July 2-7
Including an underground dinner Tuesday night.
Plenty going on in the restaurant world in Dallas-Fort Worth, even if it is Fourth of July weekend, including a chef event on Tuesday (tonight).
Chef Ryan Barnett, previously of Bistro 31 and Neighborhood Services, is doing an underground dinner Tuesday at My Private Chef in Deep Ellum. It's the first in a series he plans to continue this summer. "I really love fine dining," he says. "I've got some great herbs in my garden that I wanted to use. I'm a huge tarragon fan." There'll be two seatings, 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., with a menu that includes corn and shrimp from Texas, mussels from Prince Edward Island, and peaches from Fairfield, which Barnett used to get as a kid. "Gotta have those peaches," he says. The dinners are BYOB and cost $55 a pop, pretty cheap for this kind of thing. Tuesday night's dinner has a couple of seats left, and then he'll do dinners on July 17, July 31, and August 14. Facebook page is here, or email for more info at chefRB@me.com.
Also: Perry's Steakhouse & Grille will offer its "444" special, featuring four of its signature items, for $4 each, after 4 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays during July.
Also: "Meet and Eat" Friday Night Dinner Parties at Bolsa Mercado are a new Friday-night event during the summer. They're chef-centric events with only 20 people, limited availability, and take place at the community table, forcing you to interact with complete strangers. The first one was June 29; call the restaurant for reservations.
Canary By Gorji in North Dallas has a new menu. New items: veal bacon with greens, sauteed filet of chicken thigh with prosciutto and spinach, and barbecued veal ribs. A new prix fixe menu, which changes periodically, features a "surprising pairing" of Red Bartlett pears and arugula; striped bass Provencal with fava beans; and ribeye with pomegranate crème sauce and fresh pomegranates.
Seasons 52 began its summer menu on June 19. Dishes include an 11-ounce strip steak with tomatoes and warm crusted mozzarella; lobster & shrimp spring rolls; grilled shrimp cavatappi pasta with caramelized garlic, organic tomatoes, fresh broccoli; Summer Vegetarian Tasting -- "grains of life," soft taco, chili relleno, vegetables, cedar roasted tofu, mango chutney; and Berry Cheesecake Mini Indulgence -- cheesecake, blueberries, raspberry sauce, and graham cracker crumbs.
Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House in Dallas is hosting a summer promotion called "The Power Couple," with a three-course menu for two for $99, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Course #1 is a Caesar salad; then a crab cake paired with an eight-ounce filet mignon and a side of your choice; and dessert: cheesecake, bread pudding, or chocolate mousse.
Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar has launched summer happy hour specials and a Saturday Champagne brunch. Saturday's Champagne Brunch is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and has a live DJ; the summer drink specials run Monday through Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.
The Social House has nearly a dozen new specials at its Saturday-and-Sunday weekend brunch: Belgian waffle with fruit; white cheddar grits; biscuits and gravy with bacon or sausage; steak Benedict -- an English muffin with a poached egg, four-ounce filet, and Hollandaise sauce; The Breakfast Pub -- with bacon, cheddar, fried egg, and tomatoes on sourdough with crispy breakfast potatoes.
Sushi Axiom is now under new management. From Ra Sushi in Plano, Samuel Foos will now serve as director of human resources and Justin Levine as general manager. Recently, the Sushi Axiom location on Henderson Avenue expanded to include the adjacent A-Lounge.
TJ's Seafood Market will open a TJ's in the Shops at Highland Park on Oak Lawn, the same center as Nosh, La Duni, Mint, and Carbone's. Slated to open in October, it'll include a great new feature: a dining room with 24 seats. It'll be open at lunch and dinner, with daily specials. They'll expand their take-out program at TJ's Preston Forest to include this menu.
Saint-Emilion will be closed for its annual summer vacation from July 3 to 11.
