Where to get a hot dog in Dallas after the Fourth of July
Please don't call them wieners.
DALLAS Fourth of July may have fallen on a Wednesday this year, but as the weekend rolls around, our minds linger on that quintessential Fourth of July food, the hot dog.
Maybe it's the news that Hofmann hot dogs, from Syracuse, N.Y. are now available in Dallas at all Albertsons. Maybe it's the two-foot-long $26 hot dog that's sold at the Rangers games. Or maybe it's the pizza being foisted on the UK by Pizza Hut with a giant hot dog folded into its crust.
It's enough to give you hot dog nightmares -- or a craving. Take your pick, in alphabetical order:
Angry Dog. It all begins with the Deep Ellum iconic restaurant named for its landmark hot dog, a smoky fellow which you can -- and should -- get topped with chili and grilled jalepeno.
Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House gets its hot dogs from Rudolph's, yay, which they serve three ways: plain; topped with sauerkraut, queso, jalapenos, and chiles; or best of all, as an appetizer, wrapped in puff pastry and served with mustard dipping sauce.
Jake's has the "Flaming Dawg": A quarter-pound sausage stuffed with jalapenos and cheddar cheese, on a better-than-average poppyseed bun with hot mustard, pico de gallo, and Monterrey jack cheese.
Katy Trail Ice House, the Austin-style beer garden and restaurant on the Katy Trail, has a regular hot dog on a Kaiser roll with sauerkraut and spicy mustard on the side, or its Shiner brat, braised in Shiner bock beer.
Kuby's in Snider Plaza has die Frankenfurter and a Polish dog on a bun; but why not go for the big dog: the "wurst teller" -- sausage plate -- with housemade sauerkraut, red cabbage, and hot German potato salad.
Love Shack, Tim Love's Stockyards joint, has a dog with kraut; a "heated" hot dog with pork green chili; and the Flying Texas Dog -- a chicken-apple bratwurst combo with green chiles and onions.
Sonic's Wholly Guacamole Dog is topped with guacamole, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, jalapeno, onion, and "zesty cheese sauce" on a poppyseed bun. Guacamole on a hot dog? Available only until August 12.
The Stand on McKinney Avenue, home to the AirStream trailer, has the incomparable "Mac Daddy Dog" -- a Nathan's hot dog, good stuff, wrapped in bacon, then topped with brisket chili and "fried" mac and cheese, on a hoagie roll.
Twisted Root celebrates national hot dog month in July with a special "Dirk Diggler Dog" with a 12-inch wiener on a poppyseed bun with chili, Cheese Whiz, Onions, bacon bits, and jalapenos.
Wild About Harry is known for two things: frozen custard and hot dogs, but they also offer a "veggie dog" made with soy protein. While we're on the topic of veggie dogs, Barcadia also does a mean veggie dog topped with beans, onions, and pickled jalapenos.
Uncle Uber's Sammich Shop in Deep Ellum does a "banh mi hot dog" -- hot dog on a bun sprinkled with pickled carrot-and-daikon and fresh cilantro.
The Weiner Man, going into the new food truck park on Seventh Street in Fort Worth, has six dog options such as "Mediterranean Homesick" with peppers, olives, capers, artichokes hearts, feta cheese, and the gourmet "Summer Slaw" with cabbage, green apple, cranberries, and sliced almonds. Sounds good enough to skip the dog entirely.
