Furr’s Fresh Buffet to open in Plano on Wednesday
It'll be the fourth Furr's Fresh Buffet in the DFW area.
PLANO Furr's Fresh Buffet, the new restaurant concept from the Furr's chain, will open its Plano branch on Wednesday, in the old Steak & Ale/Bennigan's/Swan Court space at 1900 North Central Expressway.
For their opening, they're doing a charity deal on Saturday: The first 100 guests to donate to North Texas Food Bank's Food 4 Kids Program get a free buffet breakfast and a chance to win free Furr's for a year.
That's a tiny bit like Taco Bueno, which opened a branch in Allen today (Tuesday): They gave the first 30 people in line a $100 gift card. (SideDish posted the photo sent out by the publicist last night.)
The fine print on the free buffet and chance to win Furr's for a year is that guests must be 18 or older and be one of the first 100 in line on Saturday when doors open at 7:30 a.m. Donations should include healthy, non-perishable single-serve items such as peanut butter, box of granola bars, or fruit cups. The winner of the free Furr's meals for a year will be announced after doors open at 7:30 a.m.
Fresh Buffet is Furr's new concept, replacing its old-school cafeteria. The Plano branch makes four Fresh Buffets around D-FW, including Garland at 635 and Centerville (which opened four years ago shortly after the new concept was introduced); another in Arlington at I-20 and Matlock, and one in Balch Springs.
The new Plano branch will offer more than 120 items daily, at lunch and dinner, with a breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sundays.

Unlike another eatery just up the road (cough, In-N-Out, cough), Furr's was absolutely packed on opening day - the parking lot was full at 4 p.m. when I passed by.

You mentioned a key time--- 4pm. That is blue hair dinner hour. Of course a Furr's would be packed.

Ha, too true, John. But I've been highly anticipating it, too, so I would be far from surprised if there was broader audience than just retirees.

Jason, not quite sure I understand your comment - are you saying there were only eight cars in the parking lot?

Tried it for the first time on Sunday - packed as usual, although our wait was nothing like it was when we left, when the line was starting to wrap around the building. Part of the reason for the line is the semi-odd set-up where you pay first, then wait to be seated, then get your food. But it actually went pretty smoothly, and having them seat you instead of jockeying for a table amongst the masses is a plus.
Around 7-8 different stations where you could pick and choose at your leisure, which is better than the old cafeteria line system. "Fresh" seems to imply healthier, but it's still pretty much the standard homestyle fare you'd expect, so don't think they're skimping on the calories. They did have a cook-to-order section for steaks and such, but unless you're really craving it, it seems pointless to wait in another line when you can just grab other good food without little to no effort.
Not gonna be an every week trip, but I'd definitely go back.
