Spice House opens in Murphy with sports bar on the side
Home of the tandoori wing.
DALLAS Bringing Indian food to the citizens of Murphy is possibly not the easiest task, but restaurateur Vinay and Leena Golani have that covered: They opened their Indian restaurant Spice House with an adjacent bar called Spice Pub, where they have big-screen TVs and an item that's surely unique: the tandoori wing.
"Spice House of India is the restaurant, and Spice Pub is a full-service bar," says Vinay. "We have a corner lot. The front is the restaurant -- or you can walk around to the side for the entrance to the bar, where we have six 42-inch TVs and a patio. There aren't that many bars in Murphy. And I've noticed that there isn't a crossover between the people who frequent the pub and the people who dine at Spice House."Thus, the tandoori chicken wing, along with burgers, onion rings, and French fries.
"For the bar menu, we tried to create something authentic," he says. "Our chicken sandwich, we don't get it frozen and put it in fryer – it's freshly made from the chicken breast. And our wings, we use the tandoor so that it's like they've been cooked in the oven."
At Spice House, the menu has Northern Indian dishes, Southern, vegetarian, and Indo-Chinese.
"My dad used to work for the forces so I traveled all over India," Vinay says. "My favorite city was Pune, it's close to Mumbai."
The restaurant has an Indian chef and the obligatory feature for an ethnic restaurant in the suburbs: a buffet. But it also has a stylish decor and handsome bar, with black banquettes, attractive lighting, and paintings on the wall, all of which place it a step above the standard low-key Indian place. And yes, those wings.
