Creepy dating site says DFW Airport is one of the best
This is where things get a little weird.
First things first: A survey conducted by MissTravel.com, “the world’s only travel dating website,” has placed our own Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at the top of its list of America’s Best Airports to Get Stuck In. Yay, us! DFW beat out the Pittsburgh International Airport (#2), Chicago O’Hare International (#5), and Nashville International Airport (#10).
According to the associated press release, “members based their reasoning as to why they would prefer these airports to get stuck in over others on factors such as availability of extra amenities, cleanliness, entertainment, and food/shopping selection.” All good news for our airport, right? It’s good to be noticed for nice things sometimes.
The story could end there, but if you got through all of that without asking yourself, “What the heck is a travel dating website?” you’re not alone! So I kept looking into MissTravel.com because I had to know, and the result was more interesting than the whole survey thing (yeah yeah yeah, Dallas is great. Yay us).
MissTravel.com, on the surface, might look like any other online dating site. The difference is that instead of separating users into male and female categories, it separates them into “Generous” and “Attractive,” which is where things start to get weird. See, the “Generous” people are the well-off folks who travel a lot (one would assume most are traveling for business, but who knows), but don’t want to travel alone. They want to travel with attractive people (who doesn’t, right?). So they’re willing to pay a website in order to pay for an attractive man or woman to accompany them on their trip. “Travel buddies,” the website calls them. Problem is, replace the word “travel” with a certain other word and you’ve got a completely different connotation.
Somewhere, somehow, maybe this could fly (heh, get it? Like, in a jet) without sounding totally gross. I could, for example, imagine billionaire future-me offering to bring a friend on a trip so I have some company. But MissTravel.com just goes about it in a super creepy way. Like this video.
Miss Travel - Beautiful People Travel Free!
Don’t freak out, though! We’re not talking about prostitution, here. And to their credit, the people behind MissTravel.com make that very clear.
It just feels like convoluted way to accomplish the same goal as one of the founder’s other business ventures, like a dating site to pair sugar daddies with sugar babies. Or there’s this one that’s specifically for attractive people to meet millionaires. Or there’s one where “generous” people can bid on first dates with “beautiful” people. I’m surprised these are actually different audiences that can be catered to. Don’t they all boil down to “I will date for money”? Or, even at its most innocent, “I will be friends with you for money”?
Now, I’m all for pampering my significant other. I’d take my wife traveling and shopping a lot more often if I could. But to base an entire “dating” website around the concept of free trips seems misguided on many levels. What kind of relationships are you encouraging, if not gross, potentially exploitative ones?
So, yeah. What were we talking about?
Oh yeah, airports. Ours is pretty great, huh? A creepy dating site says so.
