White Rock Lake residents making waves over proposed boathouse
If you thought the Winfrey Point parking lot snafu was crazy ...
Back in May we reported on the Dallas Arboretum’s attempt to add a parking lot on Winfrey Point. Residents in the nearby Emerald Isle neighborhood balked at the idea and organized several protests outside the Arboretum’s gates, just as the Chihuly exhibit was opening, too.
It was quite the foofaraw.
Turns out, though, that White Rock Lake residents have been blindsided by a development again. At least that’s what they claim.
We received a note from an angry neighbor who is asking people to write letters and show up at City Hall on November 14, which is when the Dallas United Crew (nee HP Crew) boathouse will be on the agenda.
- “A group of wealthy Highland Parkers has secretly convinced our City Council to build a GIANT 'boat house' on the east side of the lake. The size of this facility is monstrous. It occupies the mass of three football fields. They are allowed to lease the facility at will as well as serve liquor by the drink. This will no doubt affect your ability to continue your running events as there are no restrictions on the size of the events, nor are there any limitations to the time, gate access (they are allowed to unlock the gates that currently impede motor traffic on the running and bike trails in this area). Clearly drinking, mass amounts of motor traffic, and runners do not mix).”
So, why does Dallas United Crew need their own boathouse when White Rock Lake already has a huge one? Well, there appears to be some unconfirmed drama surrounding that.
There’s a website with more information on the opposition here. (Caution: The site looks like something constructed in the days of Angelfire.) Want to peruse the documents from the Park Board meeting and approval? Here they are.

Oh noooo...the sky is falling on White Rock Lake residents.
From the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts to England's River Thames, all respectable crew teams have their own boathouses. If you visit Cambridge or Henley-on-Thames, you will find affluent, vibrant river communities. If you visit their boathouses, you will find bright, clean living athletes who enjoy their sport in the great outdoors.
Not sure about the liquor but I would bet it relates to regatta events and if this is the case, Dallas would benefit from an event similar to Head of the Charles Regatta or Henley Royal Regatta (both world class events).

They should use Bachman Lake. That area could use some cleaning up.

@ellis... oh nooo... please stop writing comments on the internet. You obviously have no context regarding the subjects at hand. In addition, suggesting that selling liquor at WRL has something to do with wooing a world class regatta event is the dumbest thing I've read on the internet in the past 48 hours.

bigeholmz8614, you must have attention deficit disorder because the angry neighbor wrote, "....as well as serve liquor by the drink". "Serve" is the key word not "sell" thus my interpretation. There is nothing wrong with serving guests a nice Cabernet, gratis, while they watch their children race on the lake. I didn't envisage a swanky bar populated with drunks running huge bar tabs. If on the other hand DUC wants to rent the boathouse to outside parties for entertainment purposes then I can understand the concerns. Have a nice day and try not to be so grumpy.

As posted by the president of Dallas United Rowing on a Dallas Morning News article:
"The contract no longer contains a provision to serve alcohol. That clause is in many city contracts for public facilities, including Dallas public libraries. When our neighbors at the lake expressed concern about that clause, we asked the city to remove it."

I vote "NO"............the now Dallas United Crew should repair their damaged relationship and stay at the existing facility......WRL doesn't need more development for a specialized user. Let them go to Bachman lake, or better the Trinity River.

I'm sure that the Katy trail development was also opposed by many who felt it would draw undesirable traffic and crowds that would devalue surrounding properties. If anything, it has revitalized the entire corridor and made surrounding properties more desirable.
I live one block away from the lake and I can't imagine a more productive and promising improvement to the lake.
