An official said Davenport died of heart failure.
Sad news in the drag world. Antoine Ashley, known in the drag community as Sahara Davenport, died at the age of 27.
Davenport competed on season two of RuPaul’s Drag Race and was eliminated on the sixth episode. Following the news of Davenport’s passing, RuPaul tweeted, “Shocked & heartbroken over @SaharaDavenport.” “Never occurred to me that we’d ever lose one of my girls. I see them as immortal.”
No word yet on the cause of death.
[UPDATE: According to the Associated Press, Davenport died of heart failure at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.]
Logo, the network that airs the reality series, mourned the loss of a drag queen sensation.
Ashley was raised in Dallas and received a bachelor’s degree in dance from SMU before moving to Harlem to pursue a career in entertainment. Her single, “Go Off,” released earlier this year, reached No. 50 on the dance charts.
Davenport is survived by boyfriend and Drag Race third season runner-up Manila Luzon, whose real name is Karl Westerberg.
