Army vs. Louisiana Tech game planned for September 2013 at State Fair of Texas
That makes three football games at the State Fair's Cotton Bowl in 2013.
Army will play Louisiana Tech on Saturday, September 28, 2013, the organization announced Wednesday.
That additional game is just one of the details coming into focus on the repackaged and re-purposed successor to the TicketCity Bowl.
Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said the change to the Heart of Dallas non-profit umbrella will represent a major shift. The plan is to support local charities, with the New Year’s bowl as just one of several events, including a concert series and an additional game during the State Fair, along with Texas-Oklahoma and Grambling-Prairie View.
A press conference is scheduled for noon Thursday to detail the transition.
“The TicketCity Bowl really didn’t garner a lot of local support,” Banowsky said. “With these changes, we want the game to maximize its connections with the city of Dallas and its people in a much deeper way.”
Banowsky cited strong backing from the city, Mayor Mike Rawlings, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. While the game will not feature a traditional title sponsor this year, PlainsCapital Bank has signed on as a presenting sponsor.
The bowl’s date will remain January 1, a connection to Dallas bowl traditions. The game will be televised on the ESPN family of networks, most likely ESPNU. And the matchup will involve a Big Ten team against a school from either C-USA or the Big 12.
