TCU red shirt freshman to assume QB duties after Pachall was arrested for DWI

FORT WORTH — In the wake of TCU quarterback Casey Pachall’s indefinite suspension, head coach Gary Patterson said the Frogs will look to redshirt freshman Trevone Boykin to carry the load.

Boykin is the only other player on the roster that has taken snaps under center this season.

“He’s got a great arm,” Patterson said in a radio interview. “If you’ve watched him in games that he’s come in, especially Grambling, he’s got a lot of positives that he does.”

On Tuesday, Patterson said Boykin might get snaps at tailback because of running back Matthew Tucker’s questionable status for this week’s game. In that event, sophomore wide receiver Matt Brown, who was Pachall’s backup in 2011, would have likely taken snaps at quarterback.

A long shot option at quarterback is freshman Tyler Matthews, but the team would have to remove his redshirt status for Matthews to play.

Trevone Boykin, second-string quarterback, redshirt freshman

Boykin has played in three of the four games this season passing for 74 yards and a touchdown on 9-for-10 passing. The Mesquite native has also rushed for 122 yards on 12 carries. Boykin redshirted last season.

As a high school senior in 2010, Boykin rushed for 1,799 yards and 30 touchdowns. He completed 198-of-326 passes for a 60.7 percent completion percentage. Boykin threw for 2,930 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Boykin came out of West Mesquite High School as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the state of Texas and No. 24 in the nation. He earned district MVP honors and all-state honorable mention accolades as a senior.

Matt Brown, wide receiver, sophomore

In Pachall’s absence, Matt Brown will likely be the backup quarterback once again. Brown spent the 2011 season as Pachall’s backup. He moved to wide receiver this season. As the backup in 2011, Brown played in nine games. He ran for 118 yards and six touchdowns on 24 carries. He also completed three passes for 90 yards. His longest pass play went for 54 yards.

The Allen native has not recorded a reception this season.

Tyler Matthews, third-string quarterback, freshman

Tyler Matthews is redshirted this season and has yet to take a snap for the Frogs. He threw for 2,836 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior in high school. The Wichita, Kan., native was a first-team all-state selection last season. Matthews was recruited as a pro-style quarterback. He ranked No. 6 in the nation and was the top-ranked player in the state of Kansas. Matthews also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
