Photos and review: Madonna turns political at concert in Dallas
She revealed the letters “OBMA” painted on her lower back.

DALLAS Madonna sandwiched her two-hour concert performance Sunday night at American Airlines Center with sharply contrasting religious images. The show began with a processional of monks wearing blood-red robes and intoning ominous Gregorian chants. Her male dancers were disguised as bat-like creatures. The mood was somber, foreboding.
The Material Girl then proceeded to take us through a song cycle that examined sex, liberation, sin, empowerment, love, addiction, rebellion, and finally redemption. She did it all in classic Madonna style – controversial and eye-popping.
Controversy is part of her appeal, and she courted it by using toy guns during the frenetic numbers “Revolver” and “Gang Bang.” Those guns got her a chilly reception from the recent audience in Denver, a city still healing from the movie theater shootings. Her aim was men in masks, and she took particular pleasure in splattering their blood across the video screens. It was all perfectly staged, and it had a clear message: Madonna will not be hindered.
The sold-out gig, part of Madonna’s “The MDNA Tour” named after her current album, started at 10:45 p.m., long after an opening stint by Italian DJ Benny Benassi. It also put her onstage after cancelling Saturday night’s AAC concert due to severe laryngitis. She apologized for the delay: “I’m not the kind of person that quits,” she said. “Thank you for your understanding. I’m going to sing my heart out tonight.”
That she did. It’s as if she was trying to prove herself to the naysayers who assumed she would just lip-synch her way through the performance. If she did any lip-synching, it was minimal. Every time Madonna had a microphone in her hand, she was really singing.
The further the concert progressed, the looser she got. She turned political, plugging her chosen candidate President Barack Obama but mostly urging fans to go out and vote. She couldn’t help herself, though, and later revealed to us the letters “OBMA” painted on her lower back.
While the set list was heavily influenced by the MDNA material, the crowd reaction was clearly loudest when she sang the pop classics – a spirited “Express Yourself,” a percussive “Open Your Heart” featuring Basque trio Kalakan, a seductive, stripped-down waltz rendition of “Like a Virgin” and a delicious “Vogue” production number filled with cross-dressing dancers.
Highlights from MDNA included the lovely ballad “Masterpiece” and the one-two throbbing punch of “I’m Addicted” and “I’m a Sinner.” The latter segued into a jubilant “Like a Prayer” complete with choir and Madonna in full-on church mode. The audience sang along, clapped, found themselves caught up in the gospel revival.
By then the message was crystal: Madonna prefers to nourish her soul with the uplifting joyful noise of voices in unison.

I will never go to Madonna again. She is completely disrepectful of her fans. While flashing hype about the 99% behind her, she comes on almost 3 hours after the start time on a SUNDAY night. I have news for you Madonna. The 99% WORK, they have to get up in the morning! Show was so-so, she is showing her age, but mostly her bad judgement.

People say she is showing her age but they are worried about a concert starting too late on a sunday night.. sounds like someone else is showing their age more than her..LOL Seriously I don't understand the complains of late. do you go to concerts?.. do they start at the tiem stated on the ticket?. she had an opening DJ and then she usually comes on at 10:15.. she was 30 minutes later than she was to be on stage. this is not something new for a concert you should get out more. perhaps you should have stayed home and saved your money as you are clearly not a fan.

I went to her show in Vegas twice (second time only because friends arrived a day late and wanted to go) (and also for free both times) and was thouroughly dissapointed. I left 45 minutes early on the first night thinking surely it will be all-hits at end of show the next night ....how wrong I was!
Thought she was the female equivalant to Michael Jackson but clearly that is not the case.Michael would never tour and not perform his 2 biggest hits....would never disrespect his fans that much.
She will learn next time around as her ticket sales will take a major hit.....that fans want to hear the HIts .....not some hodge podge from an album nobody is familiar with!

I have never been a fan but I gave her a chance and I went. SHE SUCKED! I thought her stage presents was bad, and her voice was even worse. If she didnt have a mulitmilion $ stage she would have had nothing to show. I expected the Obama crap so that was the only place she didnt dissapoint.

I have been a longtime fan and own one of the largest album collection of hers, but I did not go and could have gone with free band tickets. I considered taking my albums and burning them in front of the entrance to the show. Why? Because of here support for Obama. She has lived the all American dream, but now whats to support someone who does not believe in our freedoms. I will continue to vote with my pocket book.

Most of you didn't even go to any of her shows yet pretend otherwise to give your negative opinion more weight. I'm not fooled and neither is anyone else.
Her show is fantastic!

Yeah ...... The show was all I ever wanted and more. Viva Madonna! Here's a tip to anyone who is unhappy about any aspect of the show: loosen up and be happy. I'm at work right now too but you don't see me crying about 5 hours of sleep. Amateurs...

These comments are very representative of Texas. I suspect nothing less. Madonna ought to skip these concservative biggots next time. Too bad the Mexicans dont take their land back that is rightly theirs. We dont need Texas.

Worst concert I've ever been to. We left early because of Madonna's performance was horrible, songs selections were bad, personal polical views being pushed on the audience. Very unprofessional. We paid for awesome tickets to sing, dance, laugh and have a good time. Left very disappointed. We will never support another concert of Madonna's. Even the t-shirt stands were closed 30 minutes into the show that started 3 hours late with no opener. Wish she had just cancelled it and I had the money back that was wasted.

God, as if you people event went! And the show started 30 minutes late?! OH NO! Do you lot actually go to concerts at all? Obviously not, or you'd know they never start on time. Anyone who goes to a Madonna concert expecting greatest hits is a moron. And do you know how many greatest hits she's had?! How long do you want the concert to be? She refuses to turn into retro act for wowsers because enough people bought the new album for it to go number one in 42 countries and be the second biggest debut of the year (only behind ghastly Bieber). She plays for us - not you old retards.

I imagine Madonna will sing her greatest hits on a Greatest Hits Tour....considering this is the MDNA Tour, hmmm...Wouldnt ya think she would be doing a majority of the MDNA album?! Geez, people are stupid! I drove from Oklahoma City, saw the show and thought she was fantastic. The section I was in (108) knew nearly every word and we had a party in that building! If you have to work early the next day, don't go to a concert the night before. Madonna was in control last night and all you had to do was dance and sing, get up and do your thing.

And to the person saying there was no opener....ummmm, where were you?! The opener was World Renowned DJ Benny Benassi who kicked a$$ for nearly an hour. I don't think half of you even went to the same show!!

Wow! What a bunch of whiners! These are clearly not Madonna fans. While I am not her biggest fan, I did my research before the show. She hit the stage at 10:30 or 10:40 in most cities, so we arrived about 9:55 (and didn't have to pay for parking). Her set list is readily available online, so why were you expecting her to do something different? Really, people, get a clue. The show was great and interesting and she gave a great performance. She did NOT push her views -- she said she was for Obama, but encouraged everyone to go vote no matter who they voted for. The T-shirt stands were still open when we left. Sounds like many of the commenters here either weren't there or went in with such a bad attitude that they got what they expected.

Some of you are giving Texans a bad name! The concert last night was classic Madonna. She IS controversial-that's why we like her, political ( She did say, "Just vote"), and absolutely charismatic! Have you been living under a rock? To say that she was showing her age is ridiculous! Did you see her dancing and getting tossed around by her dancers? Could YOU do that? No, I didn't think so...

I had tickets to the canceled Saturday event, but had friends call last minute with extra box seats. I'm glad I didn't wind up paying what I originally spent. WHEN she was on-stage, the performance rocked. But her disappearing acts during sets and the amount of auto-tune being used left me feeling short changed. I paid to SEE her perform. Not be off stage and invisible.

Again, I must ask, really??? Did you expect her to change outfits on the stage? If she had worn the same thing, people would have complained about that. Now I understand why Dallas isn't often included in her tour itineraries...

Haters are sad bitter people! The show was FANTASTIC! I've seen every show of hers since the last time she was in Dallas in 1990 & it was SO nice to have her back on my home turf. No 54 year old can do what she does (nor can most 25 year olds for that matter). Everyone I was with thoroughly enjoyed the show. We left with huge smiles & nothing but praise for her. You go Madonna! Keep touring & I'll keep showing up with bells on : ) The one thing you can't explain to someone who doesn't know or understand Madonna's shows & her music, is that there is a soul and an artistry she brings to her show that goes far beyond all the staging, lights & money in the world. Her shows are pieces of art. I've been to more concerts by more artists than I can count and NO one does it like Madonna. No one.

I went to the show (it was my first Madonna show, but I am long time fan!) and I am a native Texan. I enjoyed the show and thought the production and wow factor was amazing! I have been to a lot of shows and actually they always start on time. This one started relatively on time, at 8:30 when Benny went on. I only wish that I knew that there was an opening act as they are usually stated on the ticket. But even with the late start her show was awesome. And, I am even ok with her stating her views and telling everyone to VOTE, but she took it too far with her OBMA written on her back...and the "I'll take all my clothes off if Obama gets re-elected." crap. That is taking it too far - no matter what your political views! OH, and to the commenter above, zoofariatl, saying that Texans are all conservative biggots, that name calling is un-necessary and totally unrelevant to this concert review. Keep it in check, please.

All these complaints are invalid. Shows always begin 2 or so hours after the doors open, which was at 8 PM. If you didn't know that, then that's your fault and you should write that in your diary and not a public forum where it makes you look like a baby with an undesrved sense of entitlement. She has every right to express her opinion at her show. If you don't like it, then do not attend her show. At this point in her career, why would you expect anything else? Did it suck that she didn't perform most of her hits? Absolutely, but I knew that coming in. So, I can't complain about that. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. However, the only issue I had was the fact that she canceled Saturday's show, which I had GREAT seats for, but then had to quickly search for other seats and settle for the upper-level (nosebleed) section. That REALLY SUCKED! She should have re-scheduled Sat's show or let Sat's attendees have seniority in choosing seats for Sunday's show. Other than that, everything was great. I'd go to her show, again. I've been wanting to go to her show since I was a kid, so this was a dream come true for me.

She sucked. I don't know what all you saw but that was NOT a Madoona concert. She totally lacked the enthusiam we all love about her. Maybe it's time to hang up her dancing shoes.

Although everyone is entitled to his or her opinion! Quite frankly, Mine is..." If you know Madonna..she has always expressed her own ideas/beliefs, through her music, through interviews, and through any movie roles she may have been in! She is the true Madonna! She has not changed! And that's why I Love her still today, as hen I first heard her in the early 80's! To know her is to love her...period! And Yes...will continue to support her... Truly an Idol/ Queen...!!!!! (My opinion) :0)

Did anyone see her fall on her ass during "Like a Prayer?" She was no where near the level she was when she actually had to earn the world's favor. I know she was really sick, but she sang off key, ruined "Like a Virgin," with the funeral dirge it became, and resorted to cheap distractions like stripping and yelling profanity to remain shocking and relevant. It was the most disappointing concert I've ever been to. Whatever your politics, is it necessary to shoot men in the head for ten minutes while blood splatters across the stage, yelling "Mo#$er F*&cker" for no apparent reason but to be edgy? Really beneath her.

Guarantee the vast majority of the negative posts here are from people who didn't go to the show. They just don't like her politics. That's fine, but are you really surprised? She has been a lifelong liberal. Get over yourselves. I personally thought the show was very good, but just shy of great. She needs to realize that many folks are there to here the classic hits. Her new album, while decent, just does not measure up. I know that artists tour to promote their new stuff, but Madonna has to know that she's becoming a nostalgia act at this point (yeah, her new album debuted at #1, but quickly fell way down the charts. Also, only one Top 40 hit from it so far). I'm an Obama supporter, but I also could have done without the preaching. Get on with the show! But, I was majorly entertained and will see her again.

We flew from Arizona to see her in Dallas. I, too, was disappointed in the late start. I've been to 100's of concerts and never had to wait that long for the event to start (BTW...I don't care about a DJ that can spin some dance music on a few turntables, I didn't pay for that) I will give her some slack as I could tell she was really sick, so considering that, I think she did a good job. As far as her being controversial...what else would you expect from her? That IS Madonna..and if you weren't prepared for that part you should have stayed home. BTW....just like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly and all the other "public" figures who espouse their opinions every day, Madonna had the right to espouse hers...so get over it Texas...George Bush ain't comin' back...you may get Romney, but you'll end up regretting it...unless of course, you're the 1%!

The show was amazing!! This was my first Madonna concert. I knew going in that she would be late. I paid to see Madonna perform songs from MDNA. I didn't pay for a greatest hits tour. I had section 110 and the view and Madonna's performance was awesome. The best 200 dollars I've ever spent. The only complaint I have is that my section was full of old people that did nothing but sit on their butts. I personally stood up and danced the entire night.

I saw the show in Dallas and then again last night in Atlanta. I went again because I thought the show was awesome. I have been to over 50 concerts including Usher and Beyonce and Madonna brings heart, soul and a deep inner energy and love that most younger artist lack. As for the guns, politics, use of the "f" word etc... it's Madonna! My only complaint was that it started so late, but since I knew this in Atlanta I went at 9:30. Lastly, the woman is 54. She is on stage working her butt off, especially in Dallas as it was clear she was not 100% well so cut her some slack, she does it for the fans and the love of music. By the way, Dallas had way more energy than Atlanta. She stopped the show twice in Atlanta to dig in on the energy or lack there of. Madonna is just being Madonna, you have to know that about her by now. When she told the Dallas crowd "you have great energy" she meant it. She even thanked Dallas for it. I live in ATL now but I'm from TX, I really wish Texans weren't so quick to pass judgment :(
