Hank Williams Jr. performs at the Stockyards Music Festival in Fort Worth on Sunday, September 2, 2012.
FORT WORTH When country star Hank Williams Jr. let loose with some controversial opinions Sunday at the Stockyards Music Festival in Fort Worth, and our readers had a lot to say about it.
First, what Williams said:
“We’ve got a Muslim for a president who hates cowboys, hates cowgirls, hates fishing, hates farming, loves gays, and we hate him!”
Williams began his anti-gay commentary a few songs earlier, mocking “queer guitar pickers” in the middle of “All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down” before moving on to his next target: liberal politicians, who he told to “move to Mexico” at the end of “We Don’t Apologize For America.”
Here are just a few of the many comments from our readers. Let us know what you think in comments.
Chuck Bloom: "This idiot is the Ted Nugent of country -- just another fool who substitutes banality for what used to be a career. He's just another has-been using bigotry to keep getting gigs. Sadly, the South props him up because of its natural tendency to lean towards such ideology."
Eliot Greenspan: "Junior's not 'politically incorrect' he's racist, homophobic and proudly ignorant."
Kathy Dalahite: "Im proud to be an American!!!! Freedom of Speech is one of our rights!!! So you go Bocephus...tell it like it is!! Your not ignorant, hompophobic etc."
Linda Ashton: "I'd rather listen to my father's scratchy old 78rpm Hank Sr. records than suffer through one of Junior's songs."
David Simmons: "Hank has been singing 'Dinosaur' for over 30 years, why is everyone getting upset by it now? Hank is friends with Little Richard and I am sure he has more gay friends then that. Everyone know Hank is a Christian, and a republican. Whats new?"
Linda Martin Law: "I used to like Hank Jr. I loved his father too,I am ashamed of ever liking him boy was I ever wrong about him.I would have never thought that he is a bigot, because his songwriting never gave me a clue that he was such a racist."
Bennie Taylor: "what is wrong with someone saying what he feels? i agree with hank on obummer being a muslim!! obama is the worst president ever and a illegal one at that."
Brian Skene: "Nobody is saying Williams can't say what he feels. That doesn't mean we have to agree with the content of his message."
Alexander John Welter: "It's sad that this moron is newsworthy."
Robert E. Waring: "You may not agree with Hank's views, but in America, he's got the right and freedom to say it, for now, but that will all change if we put that Marxist back into the White House."
Rex Curry: "Hank Williams Jr. and Ted Nugent are great representatives of the Republican party."
Tony Creswell: "Keep up the good work Hank! Most of America is behind you even though the liberal media would want us to think differently. You may be saying it in a redneck way but say it nonetheless."
John W. Ehret: "Hank Jr. may be a good musician, but he is a product of acholholism and it's affected his thinking. he has ostricized a lot of fans and his career is going to suffer for it. He should get together with Ted Nugent and crawl back under the rock they came from."

Far as I'm concerned, I don't understand the fascination on the media's end with giving celebrities any attention at all. Just because they happen to have a soap box doesn't mean anyone actually cares. Most people are center aligned and only those on the extreme left or right get "riled up." Most people don't care and most people think of folks like Williams Jr. as simply full of themselves.
I'd prefer it if journalists actually reported news and gave opinionated pieces about actual issues, not giving attention to folks like this.
