Big reveal: Finally, we find out who killed J.R. in season finale of Dallas
NOTE: Major spoilage about the Dallas season finale on TNT lurks here. You’ve been warned.
So who killed J.R. Ewing?
As his son John Ross (Josh Henderson) put it on Monday’s two-part season finale of TNT’s Dallas, “The only person that could take down J.R. was J.R.”
J.R. confessed in a letter that he had cancer – like his real-life portrayer, Larry Hagman, who died in November – and had only days to live, so he took advantage of that to frame Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) for his murder. J.R.’s loyal henchman Bum actually pulled the trigger, on his boss’ orders. Fittingly, Bum is played by a real-life Dallas actor, Kevin Page.
It was also divulged that Christopher’s (Jesse Metcalfe) mother, the original Pamela Barnes Ewing, is really, most sincerely dead, which leaves him in charge of one-third of Barnes Global. With John Ross married to New Pamela (Julie Gonzalo) and her one-third control, the Ewings now run both Ewing Energies and Barnes Global. Ta-da: Ewing Global!
Other developments: Emma (Emma Bell) helped get her father, Harris Ryland (Mitch Pileggi) arrested for drug trafficking, and Elena (Jordana Brewster) learned from Cliff that the Ewings tricked her father out of his oil legacy. Finally, John Ross geared up to match his daddy scheme for scheme and lover for lover, as he bedded down with Emma as payment for her part in Ryland’s takedown.
“Darlin’, trust me. I’m willing to pay the price,” he drawled in the final scene in perfect J.R. tones. “Just don’t tell my wife.”
TNT has given no indication of whether the series will be renewed; its ratings have been down this season, but are still plenty respectable for basic cable. We say, please, let the games continue.
