Malls extend hours for tax-free weekend
Plus, ways you can help lower-income kids get supplies they need.
LEWISVILLE During the statewide annual tax-free holiday, Vista Ridge Mall will extend its hours in order for shoppers to maximize savings.
On Friday and Saturday, the mall be will open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Some department stores, restaurants, Cinemark, and entertainment venues at the mall may observe different hours.
According to the Texas comptroller's office, shoppers are expected to save approximately $59.3 million in taxes over the weekend.
Items covered by the tax holiday include: clothing, belts, jerseys, raincoats, sleepwear, undergarments, socks, and shoes. School supplies under $100, including backpacks, also qualify.
During tax-free weekend, Christian Community Action of Lewisville (CCA) will be collecting donations for its back-to-school program at the mall, 2401 S Stemmons Freeway. CCA will have an "apple tree" complete with items that need to be purchased. Shoppers are invited to pick an apple, buy the items and return it to the CCA table by Sunday night. The display will be set up on the upper level near the food court.
"We'll have a display and tags that will identify what children need for back-to-school," said Maureen Cummings, donation coordinator. "Most people purchase the items and bring them right back to table."
CCA will also be taking cash donations. A donation of $125 will support one student and give them two new outfits, socks and underwear, new shoes, and a new backpack.
Cummings said 1,000 students from Lewisville ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Lake Dallas ISD would benefit from the program.
"After the drive, we'll build our school store in the CCA community room," Cummings said. "Students will come in with their parents and be able to shop for clothing and school supplies."
Cummings said CCA's back-to-school program has evolved over the years, but it's been part of CCA for at least 20 years.
"This year we decided to eliminate offering school supplies in favor of offering a second outfit for students," Cummings said.
CCA will also be at Stonebriar Centre Mall, 2601 Preston Road in Frisco near the service entry on the second floor.
