Dallas chef from Sundown at Granada will appear on Food Network on Sunday
Will Chef Patrick Stark get away with calling Alton Brown "A-Bomb" on camera?
When Cutthroat Kitchen premieres Sunday on Food Network, Dallas Chef Patrick Stark, from the Greenville Avenue restaurant Sundown at Granada, will be one of the four contestants trying to out-cook, out-smart, and oust the competition.
The show is hosted by Food Network personality Alton Brown (Iron Chef America, Good Eats). Each episode features four chefs who are given $25,000 to spend, or "to sabotage their competition," according to a Food Network press release. Like a game, chefs are given challenges and curveballs to make their culinary journey just a little bit harder as competitors are whittled down in three rounds. The winner gets to take home the money he or she didn't spend.
Stark likened Cutthroat Kitchen to a real kitchen, where the executive chef must perform plenty of tasks besides cooking. "It’s not really so much on how good you can cook or the fanciest dish you can make," he said of his time filming the show. "You have to multi-task prioritize on a dime, within a second. You either know what you were doing on that show or you didn’t. The curveballs they would throw really made you think about whether you were really as good a chef as you thought you were in a high-stress scenario."
No-Mercy Culinary Antics To Take Over Alton Brown’s Cutthroat Kitchen
Stark went on the show with the intent to give the prize money to his charity, Mohawk Militia, which is lobbying for labels on all products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In May 2013, he vowed to replace genetically modified ingredients on Sundown's menu with organic alternatives.
Stark's part in Cutthroat Kitchen was filmed in May 2013 in Burbank, California. He was surprised by how realistic the reality show was. "There were no producers pulling you to the side telling us what’s going to happen," he said. "It was all dependent on how well you thought on your feet."
One of the chefs on the premiere with Stark is Frankie Terzoli, who also goes by "Frankie The Bull." Stark couldn't reveal the outcome of the show, but hinted at a healthy rivalry with Terzoli. "I would hate to cross him on a bad day," Stark said.
He also developed a short but sweet camaraderie with Brown, who Stark called "A-Bomb" during the show -- "because he was going around f**king everybody's shit up." (No word on whether his nickname will make the premiere's final cut.) Brown was quick to question chefs' culinary choices during the competition -- one of the most endearing qualities of the know-it-all TV personality.
Cutthroat Kitchen premieres at 9 p.m. Central Time on August 11 on the Food Network. Sundown at Granada is hosting a watch party at the same time, with $3 beers and wells.
Stark is losing a little sleep over how the show will be framed, he said. "I have no idea if they made me out to be a tyrant or a joke. But the one thing I can hang my hat on: I tried my best and I want to donate all the proceeds to my charity. I hope that outshines whatever else Hollywood wants to depict me as."
If you watch: Tune in later in the season to see two more Texas chefs on Cutthroat Kitchen: Tanya Charles, from Greenville, Texas, will be featured September 1 in an episode called "Let Them Eat Cupcakes." Dallas chef Tiffany Derry (previously on Top Chef) will also be on the show, on a not-yet-announced date.
