Rowlett’s Movies on Main series returns September 6
Family-friendly movies like Little Rascals will be played outdoor at the public library.
ROWLETT The city of Rowlett is bringing its Movies on Main series back to downtown this year. Last year, the city moved the event to the community center's gymnasium due to concerns throughout North Texas about West Nile virus. This year, the event will take place on the lawn of the library, 3900 Main St. Open seating begins at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at dusk.
"This is the way the event was supposed to be last year. All of the West Nile concerns last year made us change its location. This year there hasn't been much talk about West Nile, so we are moving the event back downtown where it belongs," said Adam Richter, special events coordinator for the city of Rowlett.
The series will kick off on September 6 with the movie, ParaNorman. The movie is an animated film about a small town that comes under siege by zombies.
Richter said there are plans to incorporate additional entertainment into the event prior to the movies this year. Prior to ParaNorman there will be discussion about paranormal activity.
The city encourages everyone to bring a blanket and picnic basket. There will be free popcorn and sno-cones available at showtime.
"This is a really peaceful event. People get to come, kick back, and enjoy a movie," Richter said. "They are going to see a nice movie with good entertainment leading up to it and free popcorn to make it even more enjoyable."
Richter said the city tries to choose movies that are family-friendly and will appeal to a wide range of people within the city.
"It has to be something the kids are going to want to come to and watch," Richter said. "This event offers something for the whole family to come relax and have fun."
There is free parking for the event available at Coyle Middle School, 4500 Skyline Drive. Movies on Main attendees are asked to use the back parking lot of the school on September 6 due to an event already scheduled at the school that evening.
In the event of inclement weather, the city may move the movie inside to the community center. Check out the city's website at www.rowlett.com for information.
