George Strait will announce 2014 tour plans at AT&T Stadium September 9
AT&T Stadium is the new name for Cowboys Stadium, dontchaknow.
ARLINGTON George Strait’s been off the road since his June 1 gig at the Alamodome in San Antonio, which drew to a close the first leg of his “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” — allegedly Strait’s farewell tour, though in the music business there’s clearly no such thing. Word was the tour would stretch into 2014, but 'til now it wasn’t clear when Strait’s gallop into the sunset would continue.
That changed with the arrival of an invite to a September 9 press conference at … AT&T Stadium, of all places, where Strait plans on offering details concerning next year’s adios. And do keep in mind that you’re invited too, as the press conference will stream live beginning at 10 a.m. on Strait’s website.
Course, you may recall: Strait more or less christened Cowboys Stadium on June 6, 2009, when he headlined the first-ever event at the Death Star. In a lengthy cover-story Q&A with Billboard that ran just last week, Strait spoke — sort of — about his coming tour, revealing little about what to expect.
What should people expect on your tour next year? Are you going to surprise everyone by dancing?
Yes, me and the whole band are going to be dancing onstage next year. Wait till you see the little outfits. [laughs] We have some surprises up our sleeves, but aren’t quite ready to announce the tour just yet. That will come in September sometime. I did a segment in the shows this year where I sang some of my very first records, and talked about how I came to record them, and all of that. I loved doing it, so I may do it again next year, except with different oldies. I have quite a few, you know.
Below you’ll find an early-days highlight: Strait at Reunion Arena, playing as 1986 turned into 1987.
