Idle Rich Pub opens insanely early to accommodate soccer fans
Some European games are broadcast as early as 6 a.m. in the U.S.
DALLAS Soccer fans can now watch games filmed across the pond at a bar across town. Idle Rich Pub on McKinney Avenue will open as early as 6 a.m. when the four of the most popular Premier League teams for Dallas fans -- Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal -- play.
Idle Rich General Manager Charles Reis says there's an early-morning market for soccer watchers in Dallas. "With the Londoner Uptown location closing a few weeks ago, we realized there was no longer a local destination for European soccer matches," Reis said in an email. "It's something a lot of our management and some of our staff is passionate about. And it's also something that our owner, Feargal McKinney, has had practice with in the past -- at Old Monk to some degree and as a former owner of the Dubliner on Greenville Ave."
Idle Rich had already hired Josh Back, former manager at the now-defunct Londoner, who ran the early-morning soccer program there. "It seemed like a natural fit," Reis said.
The game schedule will be posted two weeks in advance on Facebook. On Saturday, August 24, for instance, Idle Rich opens at 6:15 a.m. to show the 6:45 a.m. game between Fulham and Arsenal.
At each early-morning event, brunch will be available. The bar opens at 7 a.m.
So who watches soccer when they should be sleeping? "We hope to get everyone from the die-hard fans that called the Londoner Uptown home last season, to International SMU students, to FC Dallas fans getting revved up for the World Cup next Summer, to young professionals new to the neighborhood and looking for somewhere comfortable and fun to watch a game," Reis said. "The energy that these matches create in a pub is addictive, and we expect every football/soccer fan to enjoy themselves."
With the bar closing at 2 a.m. the night before soccer games, it'll be an early morning for some at Idle.
