Rowlett hosts travel expo on September 3
Cruise over to the community center for vacation inspiration.
ROWLETT Rowlett, get ready to explore a world of vacation possibilities, right here at home.
On Tuesday, September 3, the Rowlett Senior Advisory Board, Rowlett Community Centre, and AAA Texas are sponsoring the city's inaugural travel expo. The event will give visitors the chance to learn about tours, cruises, and other vacation ideas and score some "show day" benefits, too.
"Anyone can come," said Della Vickers, Senior Advisory Board assistant chair. "You know, a lot of our programs and things that we do as the Senior Advisory Board, we do just for seniors, basically. But the travel fair, this is something that we've never done before -- this is brand-new to us and to the city of Rowlett."
Jack Hornaday, AAA branch manager in Garland and Frisco, is lending his expertise in organizing the show and lining up vendors, which include several cruise lines and tour companies as well as Hertz Rent-a-Car, The Parking Spot, and Occidental Hotels & Resorts.
Show-day-only discounts and benefits will probably be finalized a week before the show, Hornaday said.
"Typically, there's extra shipboard credits for cruise lines, or sometimes there's discounts for the tour vendors; sometimes they'll give you, like, a $50 discount off your package or $100 just for attending the show," Hornaday said. "And that's in addition to all the other discounts and benefits that they already get for booking with AAA."
One special promotion at the expo will be a nine-day big band-themed Mississippi River dance cruise on the American Queen steamboat -- a real "sentimental journey."
"And Jack Melick, who is one of the big band singers, he's going to be at the travel expo as well, so if people want to come meet him and talk about the cruise, we have special group and triple-A benefits for that one," Hornaday said.
"When you see the Senior Advisory Board is sponsoring it, it sounds like it's set up just for seniors," Vickers said. "And really, we're trying not to have it just for seniors; we would like for the whole community to show up."
The free expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rowlett Community Centre, 5300 Main St. Refreshments will be served. For information, call 972-412-6170.
