Mike Modano launched new craft beer in Denton
Modano 561 is a German Kolsch beer, now available at select bars around North Texas.
DENTON Legendary hockey player and former Dallas Star Mike Modano kicked back to enjoy a pint with the locals of Denton Saturday at Oak Street Drafthouse.
It wasn't just any glass of beer. Modano was celebrating the release of his signature recipe, Modano 561, a full-bodied German Kolsch named for his record-setting number of career goals by an American player.
Modano worked with Rabbit Hole Brewing Co. out of Justin, Texas, to devise a brew rooted in European flavors, he told Pegasus News Saturday. Modano listed Spaten lager and Stella Artois pilsner among his favorite brews and credited Rabbit Hole Brewing for coming up with a recipe “along those lines.”
It’s a unique feat, he admitted, having his record listed not only in the National Hockey League books, but also on craft beer menus.
“I never figured it would be in a craft beer, but [the record is] something I’m proud to be able to accomplish,” Modano said. He noted Modano 561 was a special collaboration and that he has no plans to release another beer.
The Modano 561 release at Oak Street Drafthouse was the first in a double-header of beer launches for Rabbit Hole Brewing on Saturday. The brewery, which officially opened in November, also debuted its brown ale called Rapture at Denton’s East Side Social Club Saturday night.
Laron Cheek, one of three founders of Rabbit Hole Brewing, said the brewery will release a third beer after the turn of the year — the 10/6 English IPA. Beginning January 16, the brewery will offer tours on Saturdays as well as open its taproom. Until then, you can find Rabbit Hole brews at select bars around North Texas.
