Would Dallas Cowboys fans accept a gay player?

Readers sound off. Tell us what you think.

Last week, SportsDayDFW asked fans if they would accept the Cowboys drafting or signing a gay player.

We asked after San Francisco cornerback Chris Culliver told radio host Artie Lange that he wouldn’t accept a gay player on his team.

The backlash was strong and almost immediate.

But, according to radio host Richie Whitt, there are plenty who think like Culliver in Texas. Whitt, a member of 105.3 FM The Fan’s Richie and Greggo show, tackled the topic his blog a few weeks ago, speaking more about the fans than the organization.

“Born and raised in this here close-minded, fear-based, suffocating Bible Belt, the Cowboys would have themselves a nightmare if they ever drafted an openly gay player,” Whitt wrote, acknowledging that he has a gay brother. “I wish it wasn’t true, but the Metroplex is nowhere near ready for a gay sports star.”

Some highlights of what the fans on dallasnews.com said:

John Mills: Who cares....Those who have an issue with it.....would throw those issues in the trash after the first touchdown...

Monte Malone: It depends, which one?

David Hardt: who cares as long as they can play the game!

Sheryl Mexic: Get over it people. Being gay will eventually be a non-issue. Just think how offensive it would be if you were asked if blacks should be accepted in the NFL? No different. They are normal people, not freaks like some people make them out to be.

Zeak Hill: You can't change your nationality but can change your sexual behavior . So, don't compare a abnormal sexual behavior to being black. When God made the man(Adam) he saw that the man was without and told him it was not good for him to be alone then he made the man a companion which was a Female(Eve) because every other creature (animals, birds & fish) had companions(male & female). Only man has decided to go against the divine order of creation or nature because GOD gave them the freedom of choice. However, with animals they don't have that choice. You don't see homosexual animals(dogs, cats, etc...). When a dog is in heat he goes and find the opposite sex which is normal. homosexuality, fornication, murder, theft, lying, & etc.. all other sins are all acts which first occurs in the mind which require a decision to act upon or sustain from. However, a person can NOT decide whether or not they want to be african, mexican, asian, european, etc... So, I say take that lie back to the pits of hell from whence it came.

Ed Adams: As for me - If he makes the squad = welcome on board. Maybe I wouldn't buy a T-shirt with his number.

Lila Ann Asato: Look i'm uncomfortable talking about gay related issues b/c i think that its like religion, & abortion there is no right or wrong answers here however having said that my question would be why would a gay person want to play football anyways correct me if i'm wrong here b/c like i said i have never had to deal with this kind of issues but wouldn't u think that a gay person would be in the fashion industry or something like the modeling industry, perhaps the entertainment industry, I mean football is a MANLY TOUGH INDUSTRY so yeah i would oppose any gay person to play football especially at the PROFESSIONAL LEVEL. Just saying like i said correct me if i'm wrong.

Jody Cameron: Nice job stereotyping all gay people. There are gay men that are just as big and 'MANLY' as any NFL football player. The question isn't would you think most gay men would 'Fit in' in football. Being gay is irrelevant as long as they do their job on the field. It's not like they are going to start an orgy in the locker room or anything. I think that if an openly gay player came in and took us to the Super Bowl, most people wouldn't care about what he does in his PRIVATE life.

MileHighJoe: The big problem is that so-called macho football players can't stand the thought of a gay guy beating them at football. Too much of a threat to their masculinity.

Snuff3: It doesn't matter if the fan "accepts" a homosexual. We aren't the ones who would have to stand naked in the locker room next to one.

texasghost014: Who cares if he's gay or not. If he can throw an accurate football..I'll take him over Romo any day of the week.

Vickie Harris: How horribly sad that you even have to ask that question.

People will always be ignorant, no matter how far our society progresses. By the way, that is a photo of me at Cowboys Stadium in my manly Carolina basketball warmup jersey, which is clearly not fashionable for this area. And last I checked, I was married to a man.
