Food truck review: Phatso’s Cheesesteaks are “best thing to come out of a trailer since your mom”
According to their slogan, at least.
DENTON There’s something special about the anticipation of walking up to a food truck. Questions about whether or not the food will be good begin running rampant through the heads of hungry customers as they quietly wait their turns to make a selection.
Phatso’s taste is worth the outdoor waiting. Their cheesesteaks deliver explosive flavors with savory beef, sweet onions, and delicious mushrooms, all with a melted cheese of choice that only can compliment the other ingredients.
Most sandwiches are about $8 after all the toppings are added.
The Denton version of this Austin original sits at 1002 Ave. C and opened about two weeks ago.
Their slogan, “the best thing to come out of a trailer since your mom,” might be humorous, but the food is no laughing matter. Phatso’s offers numerous options give customers the chance to eating multiple variations of the famous Philly cheesesteak.
The choices for meat are beef and chicken, costing $5.25 and $5.75. There are only two cheese selections—Cheese Whiz and provolone, both 75 cents. The truck offers a variety of veggies, including onions for free, and mushrooms and jalapenos for 75 cents. Bacon and pepperoni are also available for $1. Sauce choices include marinara, buffalo, barbecue, and ranch for another 75 cents. An additional $1.25 will get french fries, and for an extra buck, sweet potato fries.
Cheese ($2.25), bacon cheese ($3.25) or pepperoni fries ($4), are also available.
While the food is scrumptious, preparation time can be slow and the seating arrangements consist of an outside table with a few chairs. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.
Another problem is that Phatso’s has an erratic schedule that tends to be difficult to predict, so people walking to and from campus may not want to depend entirely on their availability.
Overall, Phatso’s produces an amazing sandwich that will leave any person craving a Philadelphia meal full of bliss — and cheesesteak.
