Dallas Gospel group The Relatives releases video for “We Need Love” off forthcoming album
The video was recorded live at lead singer Rev. Gean West's church in South Dallas.
The Relatives - “We Need Love”
Two cuts from the forthcoming Relatives record The Electric Word, due February 19, are already available for sneak-previewing: “Bad Trip” and “Things Are Changing,” both below for those in need of some funky uplift this morning. To that small but estimable stack from the should-be local heroes add another offering just posted this morning: “We Need Love,” recorded live in Rev. Gean West’s West Dallas house of worship, God’s Anointed Community Church of God in Christ on Gallagher Street and Vilbig Road.
Its director is Austin’s Andrew Shapter, who knows something about working with Texas legends; look no further than this short film for Texas Monthly about Willie Nelson and his guitar. And it was accompanied on YouTube by this brief testimonial by Heavy Light label Noel Waggener, who rediscovered the gospel-funk-rock-n-soul combo decades after they thought they’d shouted their last amen.
“We Need Love” was filmed at Rev. Gean West’s tiny church in one of Dallas’ impoverished neighborhoods. As a child, Rev. Gean preached for quarters on the streets of the same neighborhood. The thing I keep telling people about this video is that it really happened. That is, we set up the time, place and camera crew and this is what The Relatives brought. From the same ecstatic COGIC traditon that brought us Elder Utah Smith (who many now say invented Rock n Roll guitar) you get what you see here.
We’ll have much, much more on The Relatives closer to release date; praise God. Till then, you can get a head start below.
