The new season of Project Runway starts this month on Lifetime and with a twist. This season, the designers will work in teams from the get-go as part of Project Runway‘s first ever Teams Edition. Collaboration is the name of the game and the designers will have to fight their way through team challenges with only one designer being the winner of $100,000 to start his/her own apparel line, in addition to a fashion spread in Marie Claire and a 2013 Lexus.

I don’t mind the occasional team challenge on my reality TV competitions, but I am usually turned off when they do more than two or three during a season. I am, however, excited to see that Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, and Nina Garcia will be there. Their absence is one of the things I don’t like about the show’s All Stars incarnation.

One of this season’s designers, James Martinez, is from Dallas and was in the top 10 for the Texas’ Next Top Designer award. According to his cast bio info, his proudest design was a handbag he made for his mother, whom he calls his best friend. Martinez majored in Fashion Design at the Art Institute and calls denim his favorite material to work with.
