Miss Mesquite heads to statewide pageant for the first time in city’s history
Dejenae Parkman will be attending the Miss Texas pageant in Houston next month.
MESQUITE Dejenae Parkman is attempting to do something no one from Mesquite has ever done. Parkman will represent the city of Mesquite in the Miss Texas USA pageant August 30 - September 1 at the Hilton Post Oak Hotel in Houston.
"There has never been a Miss Mesquite competitor in the pageant," Parkman said. "This is something I always wanted to do. When I was watching the Miss USA pageant a few weeks ago I figured it was time," Parkman said. "I was doing some research and discovered there had never been a representative from Mesquite in the Miss Texas USA pageant, which means there has never been a Miss Texas USA from Mesquite."
Parkman said she has always been interested in pageants.
"I look up to those women and have always wanted to be a part of it," Parkman said. "This year I decided to go after what I always have wanted to do."
She said she has been working hard to make sure she can represent Mesquite to the best of her ability.
"I have been training my body to be as fit as possible and practicing my interview skills so I can sound professional," Parkman said. "I want to show up looking organized."
One of the biggest obstacles Parkman has discovered in being the first representative from Mesquite is that there are no sponsorships set up to help with expenses.
"Most other cities have sponsorships already in place automatically. Since there has never been a Miss Mesquite, there are no sponsors automatically set up to go to the next Miss Mesquite," Parkman said.
She is attempting to overcome this hurdle by soliciting local businesses to assist with her efforts to bring the Miss Texas USA crown to Mesquite for the first time. So far Parkman said she has met with several businesses and the chamber of commerce to reach out for assistance.
"The chamber told me I could speak at their next meeting to address their membership," Parkman said.
She plans to continue looking for sponsorships to help cover her expenses, including a $1,095 entry fee into the pageant, attire required for the pageant, and travel expenses.
Any business interested in talking to Parkman about a potential sponsorship can reach her at 214-694-1568 or by email at Drparkman21@gmail.com.
