Gymnastics coach arrested for allegedly soliciting minor
Investigators seek tips to compile a complete list of gyms where Cox worked.
PLANO Plano Police Department detectives have arrested a local gymnastics coach on charges of using the Internet to solicit a minor, a second-degree felony.
Lyndsey Ryan "Wes" Cox, 26, was arrested Monday, four days after a joint investigation was launched by Plano PD and the Collin County Sheriff's Office. The investigation was sparked Friday after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a cybertip from the mother of the alleged victim, a 14-year-old boy.
The affidavit accompanying the arrest warrant states Cox used to coach the victim and that the two had an online relationship where Cox would speak about his sexual exploits. He also allegedly showed the victim nude photos and videos of himself, and asked the victim to do the same.
The victim was interviewed at the Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County and an investigator assumed the victim's identity and engaged Cox in conversation, the affidavit states. Cox told the undercover office he could reserve a hotel room, and a meeting was arranged for 2 p.m. Monday. Cox was arrested after making the hotel reservation, said Officer David Tilley, Plano PD spokesman.
Investigators are not releasing the names of the gyms where Cox coached, Tilley said, partially because they do not have a comprehensive list. They are, however, encouraging all parents who have children in gymnastics classes to talk to their child and find out if they recognize Cox.
"If he has worked with these kids, the parents will probably recognize him or his face," Tilley said. "[Cox] lives in Hurst so he could have worked anywhere in the Dallas area."
A search of the hotel room Cox rented turned up a duffle bag containing boys' underwear, a pillow, and an item of a sexual nature.
Cox is being held at the Collin County Jail on $100,000 bond.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Plano PD at 972-941-2580.
