Katy Trail Ice House Outpost in Plano is open, with beer specials this week

PLANO On June 10, Katy Trail Ice House Outpost in Plano opens near Park Boulevard and Preston Road. But if you've snuck by there in the past few days, it's already softly open to curious beer drinkers.
Take a look:
As reported in May, the bar is a sibling restaurant to Katy Trail Ice House in Uptown, an Austin-style oasis where the shaded trees and sprawling backyard make Dallas' hustle-bustle feel far away. That's the same concept behind Katy Trail bar #2 in Plano. Co-managing partner Buddy Cramer has taken some heat for keeping the Katy Trail name at the suburban outpost since the Katy Trail is nowhere near it. But he says the traffic on Park Boulevard in Plano, where the new restaurant's patio faces, feels far away. He believes it retains the spacious, off-the-beaten-path vibe of its namesake.
"We brought in so many trees and done so much landscaping to protect the barrier so you don't see the road or parking lots," Cramer said.
"Believe it or not, I think we've done a pretty damn good job making this look like the Ice House. There's no Katy Trail there, but other than that, you get the same feel."
The Ice House Outpost will serve food and drinks all week, but a special set of events next week usher in the official opening. Each evening will come with beer specials in honor of the Texas brewery highlighted on that night:
- Monday, June 10: Rahr
- Tuesday, June 11: Shiner
- Wednesday, June 12: Franconia
- Thursday, June 13: Deep Ellum Brewery
[Editor's note: Monday was originally scheduled to have Shiner as a special, with Rahr on Tuesday. The two events have switched dates. The information above is correct.]
The building in Plano formerly housed Bandito's, a Tex-Mex restaurant that Cramer is affiliated with. He and business partner Joe Tillotson reclaimed the space for the new concept this spring and changed it from a Tex-Mex joint into a patio bar and grill in about a month.
The menu at Katy Trail Ice House Outpost is the same as the Uptown location (see it here). Expect barbecue on the weekends.
