Dirk Nowitzki and jalapeño eating contests top this weekend’s quirky events
Lovably odd, we'll call them.

Jalapeno Half and 5K: Participants can dress up in jalepeno-themed costumes for a contest at the event at Trinity Park in Fort Worth. There’ll also be a jalapeno-eating contest. As Paris Hilton would say, “That’s hot.”
Dirk Nowitzki’s 2013 Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game: See a bunch of guys who are famous for playing other sports play some baseball for a good cause at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. Those scheduled to play include Dirk Nowitzki and Vince Carter of the Dallas Mavericks; Dez Bryant and Brandon Carr of the Dallas Cowboys; Drew Pearson (former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver); Jason Terry (Boston Celtics guard and former Mav) and J.J. Barea (Minnesota Timberwolves point guard and former Mav). Proceeds will benefit the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation and the Heroes Foundation.
Okra Palooza: Celebrate the somewhat slimy vegetable at a Sunday event at the Lot, sponsored by Promise of Peace Community Garden. Admission includes okra and other food tastings, a concert by musician Russ Hewitt and two brews.
Liberty by the Lake: The July 4 celebration in the Colony features quirky competitions, including salsa-making contest, a bubble gum bubble-blowing contest, an Elvis impersonator contest and a watermelon eating contest.
