Zing! Whataburger’s Spicy Ketchup returns
A whole news story about a condiment? Youbetcha.
Beginning today, Whataburger Spicy Ketchup is back for a limited time. The zesty condiment debuted in January 2012 to a cultish following.
"Our fans loved it. And since we introduced it the first time around, they kept asking for it back. It's one of those things that's back by popular demand," said Karina Alderete, spokesperson for Whataburger.
The Spicy Ketchup is the same as Whataburger's Fancy Ketchup, but infused with red jalapenos.
Now here's what you really want to know
Do the numbers on the bottom of Whataburger ketchup containers delineate slightly different flavors of the ketchup? The discussion is one bandied about on the Internet where some people believe that Whataburger has added slightly more sweetener -- or less -- depending on the serial number on the label.
Some have gone so far as to say a certain number is better than another. Yes, this is really a discussion.
And the dream-crushing moment: Those numbers don't mean diddly -- at least not to the flavor inside each package. They simply delineate the fill line that was used in the production facility. The only reason Whataburger's ketchup should taste different is if you're trying the Fancy vs. the Spicy.
If you re-heely love Spicy Ketchup
It's available in every Whataburger store beginning March 4. No word on how long it'll stay available.
We reported in 2012 that the Spicy Ketchup was "not particularly hot or spicy; has a mild kick; seems like it would be better on something like eggs rather than for fries."
Last year's limited-edition Spicy Ketchup craze ended with a Facebook giveaway, which garnered the San Antonio-based brand 20,000 entries, according to a press release. This year's batch will feature a similar giveaway through Twitter. To enter, retweet this:
