Former Dallasite explores best in late night eats on TV show Feed the Beast
The first two episodes air Wednesday night.
For many, dining at 2 a.m. is a guilty pleasure. For former Plano resident Mikey Roe, it’s his job.
Roe has made it a habit to seek out restaurants worldwide where he can grab grub in the wee hours of the morning. Wednesday night, you can find Roe doing just that in a new Travel Channel mini series called Feed the Beast.
“After a good night out, a lot of times you eat,” said Roe in a recent phone interview. “There are so many places open [late] in every city to eat good food.”
After attending film school in Santa Barbara, Roe saw a void in food shows that he wanted to fill. After all, he was exploring the night owl scene on his own and meeting plenty of like minds along the way. He pitched his idea to Co-executive Producers Ben and Dan Newmark, who were immediately receptive. The crew flew to Dallas to film a short reel, which was then picked up by the Travel Channel.
In Feed the Beast, Roe tours six American cities — New York City, Austin, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles — looking for establishments original to each city that have both unique choices and an interesting ambiance. Many of the places Roe visited on camera he had previously tried, but many he found through Yelp reviews.
What’s his advice for other travelers looking to for the best local eateries?
“Ask a bartender,” he said since their schedules are most conducive to late night eating. “That’s where you’ll get the best answer.”
Roe is a big fan of “breakfast before bed” and, when in Dallas, can often be found consuming the Texas Eggs & Bacon pizza from Sfuzzi. His go-to late night munchie, however, is biscuits and gravy — in homage to his grandmother, who would often wake up and cook breakfast by the time Roe and his friends returned from a night out on the town.
Mikey's favorite Dallas hotspots
But Wednesday night, Roe will be venturing outside his breakfast cravings when he gets raucous and rowdy in San Francisco and Austin in back-to-back episodes. On the West Coast, he'll indulge in burritos, deep fried Twinkies, and buffalo wings. After making the rounds on 6th Street in Austin, Roe devours kimchi fries, Jackalope sausage, and more.
Preview the two episodes below and catch Feed the Beast on the Travel Channel at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
