Get vintage clothing for cheap at Deep Ellum’s new shop Elluments
Elluments is located on Elm Street opposite Trees.
DEEP ELLUM Apparently, Dallas isn't a good place for hipsters. Not enough vintage stores.
Whereas coastal cities like San Francisco and New York have an over abundance of consignment and vintage, Dallas' fashion treasure troves are few and far between.
Felicia Dunnican and Karina Garza are looking to change that. As owners of Elluments clothing shop on Elm Street, the fashionistas opened a hybrid vintage and re-sale spot for men and women looking for a stylish outfit on a constrained budget.
At its core, Elluments is a hipster’s heaven. The right wall is Dunnican’s vintage incarnation — lined with racks of colorful silk blouses, floor-length overcoats, funky blazers, and vests to complement a pair of skinny jeans. To the left, Garza stuffed the shelves with consignment dresses, sweaters, tops, skirts, and jackets, much of which she bought from residents of Deep Ellum.
Designer brands such as Chanel, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Prada can also be found in the mix.
Kitschy accessories — from suitcases, shoes, hats, and ties to jewelry, belt buckles, sunglasses, and purses — crowd the center aisle of the store and every available bit of counter space. Consignment art covers the walls, meaning every painting is up for grabs. The effect is something out of an I Spy book where interesting objects continually catch the eye.
Owners Dunnican and Garza were seemingly destined to be business partners. Coincidentally, they both attended the Art Institute and live in the Knox/Henderson area. After meeting at a yard sale in the summer of 2012, Garza agreed to help Dunnican set up and manage her retail website.
“We started thinking, ‘This is really difficult. Wouldn’t it be easier to hang things on a rack?’” said Dunnican, a vintage veteran of 10 years. And that’s what they did.
Dunnican and Garza settled into their Deep Ellum home in September 2012 and opened the following December. Their next plan is to design an original Elluments clothing line, which they will produce from their studio located above the store.
The line will consist of “things you can mix with more classic pieces -- that you can dress up and down effortlessly,” Garza explained. She currently sells her own brand of metal wrap jewelry showcasing the Amethyst stone.
Elluments store hours are catered to Deep Ellum peak times — Wednesday to Friday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. They hope to stay open seven days a week in the future.
