Frights, thrills, and frills: The weekend’s 5 quirkiest events
Eccentric events for the elegant eclectic.
Looking for something different to do this weekend? We have you covered with these lovably oddball events.
Texas Frightmare Weekend: Danny Trejo, Jake and Gary Busey, Virginia Madsen and cast members from The Walking Dead are among the guests at the horror convention, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Hyatt Regency at DFW International Airport. They had me at “Danny Trejo,” but panels such as the Zombie Response Team (please tell me they wouldn’t do the stuff the people on The Walking Dead have done), Scaryoke and tons of scary, scary movies are some of the other attractions.
Kentucky Derby hat contest: Got a top hat with tiny horses racing on the brim? Or any other generally awesome headgear? Wear it to the races at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie on Saturday. Prizes will be awarded for the most stylish and most creative hats.
Mustache contest: Nothing says Cinco de Mayo like a mustache. OK, maybe that’s not true at all, but Blue Goose Cantina in Plano is hosting a mustache contest and live music on Sunday. At all of the local Blue Gooses (Geese?), they’ll have Dos Equis (encircled with a mustache-charm thingy) and Tecates for $2.
Pedal Car Race: Oh, the cuteness! Kids ages 2 to 5 will race pedal cars (four-wheeled vehicles that you pedal) at a Sunday event in downtown Wylie benefiting the Wylie area Special Olympics program.
