Will run for beer: DFW’s wackiest themed runs
Want to dash across the Rangers baseball field without the fear of getting arrested? We have a 5k for you.
Long-distance running is not for the faint of heart — blisters, aching calves, and breathless laps are just a few of the side effects. But the outside sport has picked up steam in the recent year with fun, quirky races popping up all over North Texas — many giving participants more of a a reason to run than just the cardio.
We’ve put together a list of some of the most humorous and entertaining runs from a 1k (2/3 of a mile) to a triathlon to help you get your mind off the pain.
10k and 5k Hero Run on May 11 at Williams Athletic Complex in Mesquite – Ever wonder what it would feel like to fly in your favorite superhero costume, just like Superman or Batman? Wear your best superhero costume to this 10k or 5k; we promise you won’t be the only one.
5k or 10k Bagel Run on May 19 at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas – It’s a known fact that carbohydrates are a great choice before a race. Why not celebrate with the same yummy energy-source after? Cross the finish line and take your pick from the biggest bagel spread you’ve ever seen.
Disco 5k and 10k on May 19 at Fair Park – Dress in your best Saturday Night Fever getup for this 10k or 5k race through Fair Park. Finish the race and you’ll receive a funky tie-dye shirt.
Run For Your Lives 5k on June 1 in South Forney – You won’t know which one to focus on more — making it through the obstacles, or running from the zombies chasing you. Runners will wear three flags (much like flag football) symbolizing their "lives"; once those flags are ripped off from the oncoming zombies, they become a zombie and begin chasing other runners. Enjoy an Apocalypse Party before and after the event to help get your courage up.
Down and Dirty Run 5k and 10k on June 2 at Cedar Hill State Park – This race is for those who aren’t afraid to get a little messy. The muddy course is filled with more than 20 obstacles including a 5-foot ladder wall, marine hurdles, and a sand bag carry.
Must Dash 5k on June 15 at Galatyn Park in Richardson (in honor of Father’s Day) – May the best moustache win! Grow your own or sport the funkiest ‘stache you can get your hands on. The first male runner to cross with a real mustache wins an award.
Run or Dye on June 22 at Fair Park – Nicknaming themselves the “world’s most colorful 5k,” this 3.1-mile race will shower you with a rainbow of colored powder at various stations throughout the course.
Jalapeno Half and 5k on June 29 at Trinity Park in Fort Worth – The only way to spice up this 13.1-mile run in the middle of summer is to dress like a jalapeno while doing it!
Moo Cow Mini Marathon and Half Marathon on July 20 at Fair Park – For those who want to mark a half or full marathon off their list without the pain, pick either the mini marathon (2.62 miles) or the mini half-marathon (1.31 miles). You’ll even get a medal and a shirt for finishing.
Run in the Dark 5k on September 21 at Fort Worth Alliance Airport – Avoid the late-summer heat with this night run while supporting Community Storehouse at the same time. Community Storehouse is a local non-profit dedicated to improving children’s education.

Electric Zombie Run 5k on October 19 (Fort Worth location TBD) – You’ll be too busy running from zombies to notice the distance. Dress up in your most frightening zombie or vampire outfit and you might just win some cash: The top five costumes get a cash prize.
Monster Triathlon on October 27 at Keller Natatorium – This is not for the faint of feet: Start with a 300 meter swim, then cycle through a 12-mile bike ride, and finish with a 3.1 mile run. This way you’ll be able to work off all that Halloween candy this year.
