Jessica Shaw Memorial Volleyball Tournament takes place June 1
Proceeds benefit the Rockwall High School volleyball team as well as a scholarship fund.
ROCKWALL Want to have fun playing sand volleyball to help raise funds for a good cause?
Hundreds of volleyball players are expected to participate in the 9th annual Jessica Frances Shaw Memorial Volleyball Tournament June 1 on the sand courts at the new Oasis Beach & Tennis Club at 5757 State Highway 205.
Last year 38 teams participated.
The tournament is open to anyone from 9th grade through adult in three divisions:
4-on-4 coed recreational division
4-on-4 coed competitive division
Girls 2-on-2 division
The entry fee is $25 per player, and all participants will receive a tournament t-shirt. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Rockwall High School volleyball team, with a portion set aside for a scholarship for the player selected annually for the "Jessica Shaw Award." Senior Lindsey Wheeler was selected by her teammates for the 2013 award for her “leadership, friendship, and loyalty.”
The tournament is held annually in honor of Jessica Frances Shaw, a 2004 Rockwall High School graduate who died in an automobile accident in August, 2004. Jessica was a four-year starter on the Rockwall High School volleyball team, where she earned numerous awards and honors. She was also a coach for several YMCA youth teams, and for the Club MVP volleyball team. Jessica’s #10 volleyball jersey was retired and is on display in the trophy case at Rockwall High School.
