The Rockwall News is raising funds for an injured veteran with six kids
The U.S. Navy veteran needs immediate surgery, and now his family needs immediate help.
ROCKWALL An Iraq War veteran who lives in Rockwall with his wife and six children is in immediate need of financial help after unexpectedly having to undergo six hours of surgery November 4 and spend a week in recovery in the Dallas Veterans Administration Hospital after he re-injured his back while working out.
He originally damaged it jumping out of a helicopter into the Mediterrean Sea at night while serving in the U.S. Navy during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005. He served our nation for six years in the U.S. Navy and three years in Iraq.
Because doctors have told him it will take another 7-12 weeks before he can walk normally and work again in his sales position, and neither his wife nor other family members can support the family for that long, The Rockwall News has started a community fundraising drive in the family’s behalf. The children range in age from eighth grade to 9 months old. We urge our readers and area residents to show our gratitude for his loyal military service by donating generously immediately. He has asked that his name not be used.
A donation checking account has been set up by The Rockwall News at Chase Bank in the name of “Rockwall Iraq War Vet.” Donors can simply drop off or mail donations for him to any Rockwall area Chase Bank location. You can even email donations from your smart phone or computer via Chase Bank’s “Quick Pay” system, whether you have a Chase Bank account or not. It’s fast and easy to enroll. Then you can withdraw online from your account at most any bank and email donations to: RockwallIraqWarVet@myrockwallnews.com.
To donate right now, just click here on Quick Pay and follow the simple directions or you can take the long way and go to www.chase.com, click on “Products and Services” right under the Chase name, click on “Online Banking” and click on Chase Quick Pay.
Funds will be dispersed to him and his family promptly upon receiving them.
Thus far, The Rockwall News has been able to arrange for Helping Hands to make one $200 utility payment (their limit) and provide several bags of groceries for the family; arranged for a local church to pay for additional utilities; plus shown them how to apply for food stamps. But the family still needs about $3,200 more to pay November rent, two car payments, insurance and the phone/internet, which the wife uses to earn some extra income.
The veteran and his wife said they do not know how they will survive financially during the next few months while he recuperates. Aside from his small monthly base salary, he doesn’t get paid unless he sells, which he can’t do until at least early February, assuming he does not require additional surgery. He may also need funds to help pay for his medical bills if the VA does not pay for them all.
Unfortunately, his Veterans Administration disability benefits will not even begin for approximately one year because the veteran was told that VA is so far behind paying them. Congressman Ralph Hall and his office have agreed to see if they can speed up his payments, after the Rockwall County Veterans Administration Director has not returned our calls for over a week.
At the Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Rockwall County Courthouse November 11, the featured speaker asked that Rockwall area residents please reach out and help our nation’s veterans, many of whom can’t find jobs, are living in cars and facing serious injuries and illnesses associated with fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Several Rockwall area residents have already stepped up to donate to this veteran and his family. Now it’s your turn to donate to a great cause. Please do so today. Thank you very much!
